An enormous North Carolina pig, named Thanos because of his large size, is now receiving hospice care for a broken leg only two weeks after going viral.
The 800-pound farm pig was first spotted traipsing around Wake County, North Carolina, and he visited multiple neighborhoods between Knightdale and Wendell following his escape from an as of yet unidentified farm.
Locals posted videos of Thanos strutting across people's lawns on Facebook, and soon, the pig went viral.
'Who sees a big pig, just roaming around?!' Dr. Jennifer Federico, the Director of the Wake County Animal Center, asked in a Facebook group that discussed Thanos' big adventure.
Wake County Animal Control ultimately nabbed the itinerant pig on Eagle View Drive, which was south of where he had initially been spotted.
Thanos was discovered puttering about the North Carolina neighborhoods between Knightdale and Wendell
The 800-pound pig was captured at Eagle View Drive, and then, he was taken to the Wake County Animal Control Center
Thanos was taken to the center, but his massive size prevented him from being able to stay in a kennel.
The staff decided to engineer a new home for Thanos: a spacious outdoor pen that would provide him with ample room.
No owner came forward to claim Thanos, so in accordance with state law, the pig was to be auctioned off this past Tuesday.
But X-rays of Thanos revealed that the pig had been hobbling around on a leg that was broken and arthritic.
The auction was cancelled.
Before Thanos could be auctioned off, X-rays uncovered a deep fracture in his leg and the sale was cancelled
Thanos will now live out his days at the Flip Side Sanctuary, where a consummate staff will take care of his different medical needs
'That leg has been fractured. It's an old fracture. But he has extensive arthritis in that leg,' Dr. Federico told WNCT.
'He really is a hospice case at this point.'
Dr. Federico explained that although the overpopulation of dogs is an issue we hear about, the overpopulation of pigs is an even bigger issue.
This is because pig shelters aren't available in every county.
'All of the sanctuaries are full, because pigs live so long. And it's really a sad state of affairs.'
But Thanos will be all right. With the help of the Blind Spot Animal Sanctuary, Dr. Federico and her team were able to find the pig a new home at Flip Side Sanctuary.
Flip Side Sanctuary, which is in Tabor City, North Carolina, will administer to Thanos' special medical needs.
'They also have other elderly pigs that have mobility issues that are on pain meds twice a day, so he's not going to be unusual for them,' Dr. Federico said.
At Flip Side Sanctuary, Thanos will even have his own pen, in which he will have plenty of space to move his 800-pound bulk.
'I think it's cool to see where he is and just complete the story for him,' Dr. Federico concluded.
