An American Airlines passenger has railed against the travel company after being seated in a window seat on a recent flight - only to discover it didn't actually have a window.

The woman took to Reddit, where she posts under the name RockingInTheCLE, to share an image of the bizarre seating situation on her recent tip - posting the photo with the caption: 'Window seat with no window.'

In the selfie, which she posted in the 'mildlyinfuriating' subreddit, the woman can be seen sitting in the outermost seat of a row - but instead of a window next to her, there is just a blank wall.

She captioned her picture: 'I’ve never been on a flight where the window seat has no window! If my job wasn’t paying for this I’d be super salty about paying for a non-existent view. But as it is, I’m just mildly infuriated.'

A second person added: 'When you book a window seat for the views, but the airline assumes you're more into abstract wall art.'

A third person commented: 'Congratulations, you found the air conditioning riser duct seat!'

A fourth person added: 'My very first time on a plane this happened to me. I was P*****. I'll never choose the very back seat again.'

One person commented: 'The issue is a real lack of transparency.'

Another person added: 'Mildly claustrophobic to me.'

Other Reddit followers had the same experience and took to the platform to share their own pictures.

One person captioned theirs: 'Laughed when I saw this thread before boarding. Not laughing as much now.'

However, some followers were fans of the windowless seat.

One person wrote: 'That looks like a super comfortable leaning spot without having to work your shoulder and elbow into that window groove. I'd pay extra for that.'

Another person commented: 'That would be my preferred seat every time. I like the window so I don't gotta worry about other people moving around, but I prefer the shade down.'

A third person added: 'This would be the best thing ever for me. I like the window seat to get all nestled in the bulkhead and never really opened the window anyway.'

Some followers provided a solution for future travels.

One person wrote: 'I definitely recommend Seat gurus. You’ll also be warned for seats that are extra narrow or have limited leg space, etc.'

A second person added: 'Use seatguru to check out seat concerns and which ones are better.'

John Melvin, the Alaska director of fleet engineering explained to Alaska Air why the windowless seat exists.

'That’s the spot where Boeing places the air conditioning riser ducts from the belly - where the air conditioners are located - to the cabin ceiling, where the air distribution ducts are at.

'The vertical ducts are located behind the passenger compartment sidewall panels and they prevent the installation of a window in one row on the left side.'
