Two state police officers involved in the shooting death of a student teacher in the Mexican Pacific coast state of Guerrero have been placed in pretrial detention while a third cop, who allegedly fired the deadly shot, is still on the run.

The two cops, whose names have not been released by the Mexican government, turned themselves in on Wednesday amid pressure from Mexican President Andrés Manuel López and public outcry after Yanqui Gómez, 23, was shot dead during a traffic stop on March 7.

Both agents are being investigated for intentional murder and attempted murder, but were not charged during a hearing before a judge in the resort town of Acapulco on Thursday.

'I want them to be punished with life imprisonment and that this be for all criminals and murderers,' Gómez's mother, Lilia Gómez, told Milenio news network earlier this week.

Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado announced Thursday the resignations of State Secretary General, Ludwig Reynoso, and Public Security Secretary, General Rolando Solano.

Guerrero State Secretary General, Ludwig Reynoso (left), and Public Security Secretary, General Rolando Solano (right), resigned Thursday as pressure mounted in Mexico over the investigation into the death of a 23-year-old student teacher, who was shot by a police officer during a traffic stop on March 7

Local media outlets have reported that Salgado called for the removal of Attorney General Sandra Valdovinos, who as of Friday remained in her post.

'For my removal from office, constitutional and legal procedures must be exhausted,' Valdovinos said. 'I will assert my right to a hearing before the State Congress.'

The Guerrero State Police initially said the officers approached the parked Nissan Frontier in which Gómez and two other students were traveling on the evening of March 7 near Ayotzinapa teachers' college because it had been reported stolen.

The law enforcement agency said that the students were armed and fired at the officers. State prosecutors said that a gun and drugs were found in the pickup truck.

Gómez was shot by one of the police officers and died while receiving medical attention.

Despite being called on to resign as the Attorney General for the Pacific coast state of Guerrero, Sandra Valdovinos had not done so as of Friday

Following the incident, Reynoso and Solano met with reporters and doubled down on the claim that the pickup truck had been reported stolen and that the students did not want to stop at the checkpoint for a routine inspection of stolen vehicles.

The officials also said that the students had opened fire on the cops first.

However, two days later, the Guerrero State Attorney General's Office retracted the claim and said that the cops would be placed under investigation.

Ballistics report showed that the vehicle the students were in was impacted by four shots, according to Vidulfo Rosales, the lawyer representing Gómez's family.

Investigators with the prosecutor's office searched the scene and failed to find any bullet casings, thus negating the state police claims that the students were carrying a firearm. They were unable to inspect the vehicle the students were in because it had been removed from the scene by the police.

Gómez's death has sparked a series of protests that turned violent in which objects and vehicles were set on fire outside the Guerrero State Attorney General's Office in Chilpancingo, the state capital.

At least 15 National Guardsmen and four municipal cops have been injured.
