This is the horrifying moment a golf fan cheated death by standing in front of world No. 8 golfer Max Homa while he took a shot at the Players Championship.

In an attempt to film a - now viral - TikTok, an unnamed golf fan got a little too close for comfort on the 14th hole, and very nearly got struck by a ball out of the rough.

In the clip, Homa can be seen lining up for a shot during his third round at Sawgrass, before firing a ball just inches above the head of the supporter, much to the shock of him and the other fans standing near him.

Homa was asked about the scary incident ahead of his final round on Sunday, and confirmed that he struck a tree - and not a fan - in the clip.

When asked whether he believes fans stand too close in situations like that, the American said: 'Yeah, mostly. I asked them to back up, and they backed up their usual three or four steps.

'I was trying to go much higher than that. I should have probably asked them to move more, but I didn't know I was going to knife it.

'Typically you ask them to move and they take two steps back. I just think it's for their own safety. I'm glad I didn't hit anyone, it was scary.

'I was trying to go significantly higher than that... but it gave some people a good story, I heard some people laughing, so at least they got that out of it.'

Homa went on to score a quadruple-bogey nine on the hole, but will no doubt be glad everyone came through unscathed.

It was ultimately that hole that ruined his third round at Sawgrass on Saturday, as he carded a two-over 74 to see him plummet down the leaderboard.

On Sunday, he bounced back with a 71, but as of Sunday lunchtime was sitting 67th in the standings.

At the top of the leaderboard, Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman were all poised to fight for the lead on the final day of play.
