Tallulah Willis has revealed for the first time that she's been diagnosed with autism - while opening up about how the condition has 'changed her life' after she learned about it this past summer.

The 30-year-old actress and daughter of Bruce Willis shared her health discovery on Instagram to her 402,000 followers over the weekend - amid her father's ongoing battle with dementia.

She posted a throwback video of her and her father, who has over the last two years been diagnosed with both frontotemporal dementia and aphasia, on the red carpet at the premiere of the actor's 2004 film The Whole Ten Yards, which then 10-year-old Tallulah also starred in.

With the post, she wrote: 'Tell me [you're] autistic without telling me [you're] autistic.'

Tallulah (seen earlier this month at the Vanity Fair Oscars party) said that her diagnosis - which she received over the summer - 'changed her life'

In the video, a young Tallulah, who is being held by Bruce as he answers a journalist's questions, is seen fiddling with his ears and rubbing her hands over his bald head repeatedly.

Her post prompted a follower to ask about her diagnosis.

The actress responded: 'Actually this is the first time I've ever publicly shared my diagnosis. Found out this summer and it's changed my life.'

Her sister, Scout LaRue, also wrote, 'She's stimming,' with Tallulah replying: 'Dude the ear curl. I wish we had stronger audio.'

According to the Cleveland Clinic, stimming 'is when a person repeatedly makes the same movements or sounds.'

It's a way for people to regulate their emotions and it's 'often (though not always) associated with autism spectrum disorder and other neurodevelopmental conditions.'

While it's been reported that boys are 'four times more likely' as girls to have autism, recent research has concluded that almost 80 per cent of females 'are undiagnosed as of age 18,' according to UCLA Health.

Previously the Stars On Mars personality has opened up about her battle with body dysmorphia and an eating disorder, as well as her ADHD diagnosis.

'For the last four years, I have suffered from anorexia nervosa, which I've been reluctant to talk about because, after getting sober at age 20, restricting food has felt like the last vice that I got to hold on to,' Tallulah wrote for Vogue in May 2023.

She said that at the age of 25, she entered a residential treatment facility in Malibu to deal with both the eating disorder and depression she had been living with.

'It was a largely therapeutic experience; for the first time, I grieved the 15-year-old misfit me, the ugly duckling,' she said.

'I was also diagnosed with ADHD and started on stimulant medication, which was transformative.

'I felt smart for the first time, but I also started to enjoy the appetite-suppressant side effect of the meds. I saw a way to banish the awkward adolescent in favor of a flighty little pixie.'

Tallulah said that 'like so many people with eating disorders, [her] sense of myself went haywire.'

She said that 'the beginning of losing weight rapidly' led to a sense of 'unhealthy deliciousness.'

Tallulah said, 'People are like, "Oh wow!" And then quickly it turns to, "Are you okay?" My friends and family were terrified, and I dismissed it. They'd say, "Is this the ADHD medication?"'

She said that she was 'very protective' of her medication and 'rationalized it' by reminding herself how it improved her focus.

'An eating disorders therapist would tell me later, the smaller you are, the bigger you feel,' the actress wrote. 'How twisted is that?'

She said that by spring of 2022, she weighed 84 pounds and was dealing with significant health complications as a result.

'I was always freezing,' she said. 'I was calling mobile IV teams to come to my house, and I couldn't walk in my Los Angeles neighborhood because I was afraid of not having a place to sit down and catch my breath.'

It's been nearly two years since Tallulah's stepmother Emma Heming, 45, released a joint statement via Instagram with her two daughters and Willis's ex-wife Demi Moore , 61, and daughters Rumer, 35, Scout, 32, Tallulah, 30, announcing that the actor was stepping back from acting amid his aphasia diagnosis.

In the March 30, 2022 statement, they said that Willis had been 'experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia , which is impacting his cognitive abilities.'

It continued: 'As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him. This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support.

'We are moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him. As Bruce always says, "Live it up" and together we plan to do just that.'

In November 2023, Tallulah shared an emotional post about her father's health battle.

At the time, she posted a selection of pictures of her and her father, including one that showed her beaming with Bruce's arm around her as they cozied up together on a sofa chair.

The actress captioned the post: 'Damn, these photos are hitting tonight. You're my whole damn heart and I'm so proud to be your Tallulah Belle Bruce Willis.'
