Kim Jong Un's father, Kim Jong-il, had five wives officially, however the late North Korean leader only perceived one of them as legitimate.
Kim Young-sook, who was the daughter of a high ranking military official was the only partner Jong-il considered to be his 'official' partner.
The pair share two daughters - Kim Sul-song who was born in 1973 and Kim Chun-song who is believed to have been welcomed into the world between 1976 and 1977.
There are very few details reported about Kim Chun-song beyond her birth date.
According to Al-Jazeera, the couple's eldest daughter Kim Sul-song was the former leader's favourite child.
Sul-song is an established academic, and possesses the ability to speak several languages,
She also reportedly collaborated closely with her father as well as grandfather Kim il-Sung.
The 49-year-old was in charge of her father's schedule, security and travel plans, Al Jazeera reports.
However since the 2000s, the sister of the present North Korean leader has become a more discrete figure in the country's politics - despite continuing to be a high-ranking player.
Although she owns multiple large trading companies, it is not clear what her current role is in her brother's political regime.

Some believe Sul-song is a probable candidate to take over if anything were to happen to Kim Jong-un.
Similarly to her older sister, Jong-il's youngest child Yo-Jong showed a keen interest in North Korean politics from an early age.
The youngest sister of Kim Jong Un holds the highly esteemed position of deputy director of the country's state media and cultural affairs.
She is also in charge of Kim Jong Un's schedule as well as managing his bodyguards and meetings.

He was the product of the late North Korean leader's relationship with South Korean actress, Song Hye-rim.
The 45-year-old grew up with his mother's family and lived outside of the secretive country intermittently for a decade.
He was educated in both Russia and Switzerland before eventually making his return to North Korea.

The eldest son of Jong-il was open about not wanting to succeed his father as leader of the country.
His father requested that his eldest son not be targeted by assassins in his will, according to Al-Jazeera.
In 2017, he was exposed to nerve agent at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia and died.
It has not been confirmed who assassinated Kim Jong-nam.
Kim Jong-chul (pictured: 2015) is the other son of former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il. Jong-il reportedly said the 35-year-old didn't have the right personality for North Korean politics
Kim Jong-chul, 35, is the other half-brother of North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un.
Birthed from Jong-il's fourth marriage to Ko Yong-hui, similarly to his older half brother, he also did not take an interest in politics.
Instead, similarly to his father he enjoys writing, films and listening music, with a particular fondness for American blues, rock music and electric guitars.
In comparison to his sisters, his role in the regime is smaller, working as a contributing writer for the country's official publications.
