Hundreds of Jewish creatives and Hollywood professionals including Debra Messing and Eli Roth denounce British director Jonathan Glazer's Oscar speech in open letter

Around 500 prominent Hollywood figures have signed an open letter condemning Jewish director Jonathan Glazer Oscars acceptance speech, accusing him of likening Israel's assault on Gaza to the treatment of Jews during the Holocaust.

The letter was published Monday by Variety. It was signed by luminaries such as Debra Messing, Eli Roth, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Julianna Margulies

After winning the award for Best International Feature for his film Zone of Interest, British-born Glazer took to the podium and said that his movie showed 'where dehumanization leads at its worst. It’s shaped all of our past and present.'

'Right now, we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people,' he continued.

'Whether the victims of October — whether the victims of October the 7th in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza, all the victims of this dehumanization, how do we resist?'

In response, the letter says: 'We refute our Jewishness being hijacked for the purpose of drawing a moral equivalence between a Nazi regime that sought to exterminate a race of people, and an Israeli nation that seeks to avert its own extermination.'

'Every civilian death in Gaza is tragic. Israel is not targeting civilians. It is targeting Hamas. The moment Hamas releases the hostages and surrenders is the moment this heartbreaking war ends. This has been true since the Hamas attacks of October 7th.'

'The use of words like "occupation" to describe an indigenous Jewish people defending a homeland that dates back thousands of years, and has been recognized as a state by the United Nations, distorts history.'

The stars go on to accuse Glazer of giving 'credence to the modern blood libel that fuels a growing anti-Jewish hatred around the world, in the United States, and in Hollywood.'

'The current climate of growing antisemitism only underscores the need for the Jewish State of Israel, a place which will always take us in, as no state did during the Holocaust depicted in Mr. Glazer’s film,' the letter goes on.

Others who signed the letter include writer Amy Sherman-Palladino and producer Amy Pascal as well as a litany of Hollywood agents and executives.

Glazer has yet to make a comment on the new letter.

Glazer said he hopes the film will draw attention to current conflicts in the world. 'All our choices are made to reflect and confront us in the present. Not to say, "Look what they did then," rather "look what we do now,"' he said.

Sandra Hüller, one of the film’s stars, wept as Glazer’s hands shook while reading his acceptance speech. Hollywood A-lister Mark Ruffalo was also enthusiastic in his applause for the speech.

However, one of Zone of Interest's producers, Danny Cohen, who shared the stage with Glazer condemned the remarks in an subsequent interview saying that he 'fundamentally' disagreed with them.

'It’s really important to recognize it’s upset a lot of people and a lot of people feel upset and angry about it. And I understand that anger frankly,' Cohen said in an interview on the Unholy podcast.

Holocaust survivor, David Schaecter wrote an open letter calling Glazer's comparison 'morally indefensible'

Earlier this month, the president of the Holocaust Survivors’ Foundation USA also slammed Glazer's comments.

Holocaust survivor, David Schaecter, who spent three years at the Auschwitz death camp and one at Buchenwald, wrote an open letter calling Glazer's comparison 'morally indefensible.'

'You should be ashamed of yourself for using Auschwitz to criticize Israel,' said 94 year-old Schaecter.

Hüller plays Hedwig, the wife of Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel), the bloodthirsty commandant of Auschwitz. The film was the United Kingdom’s submission to the Oscars.

In the film, the couple and their children go about their daily routines — living in a home just on the other side of a stone wall from the gas chambers. H

Höss spends his work days overseeing the 'processing' of trainloads of people, most sent directly to their deaths. Then he comes home, where he and Hedwig share meals, celebrate birthdays, read their kids bedtime stories and make vacation plans.
