An influencer has divided opinion by saying men 'should pay' on the first date because of the investment she makes in costmetics to look good.

Elle McNamara, from Derbyshire, took part in the TikTok trend where creators break down the hidden cost of their make-up routines.

The TikToker, who goes by the name BambiDoesBeauty online, is known for her make-up and beauty videos, especially those where she claims to have 'aged backwards' to look younger at 33 than she did at 23.

And in her lastest 'GRWM' (Get Ready With Me) video, Elle explained that men 'should pay on the first date' because the total cost of her look came to £233.07.

Elle's glowing make-up routine included products from Dior, Chanel and Rihanna's make-up brand Fenty.

The light-hearted video was made with a very tongue-in-cheek tone, but still made the point that getting ready for a date as a woman can be very expensive.

However, it divided opinions online - and one commenter even went so far as to brand it 'sexist'.

One wrote: 'Complete disagree with this cause we choose to buy and wear makeup.

'And one use wouldn’t equal the whole amount of purchasing it. But you are GLOWING!'

A second commenter added: 'I hope this is a joke. you're not wearing £233 worth of make up. That would mean you've used it all up for one look which obviously is not the case,' while a third said: 'This makes no sense.'

The debate of who should pay on the first date is a contentious one - and can lead to awkward situations as people have different preferences.

According to a recent poll of MailOnline readers, 40 per cent believe that the man should pay the bill on the first date, while 58 per cent said it should be split. Just two per cent believe that the woman should pay.

In another similar video, a TikTok user under the name @naginadarling said the total cost of her make-up routine came to $1,326 (£1,042)

Again, some in the comments disagreed with her reasoning, writing: 'I don’t like this argument.

'You do all that because you want to. It’s not a requirement to date.'

But women were generally supportive, with some even arguing that the amount doesn't include 'nails, eyebrows, outfit, shoes and purse' - and should be higher.

The look totalled over £230

It comes after a dating coach revealed that he believes the man should always take care of the bill on the first date.

Niko Emanuilidis, 30, is a relationship guru who frequently shares romance tips on his TikTok account, where he boasts more than 162,000 followers.

Recently, the New York-based love expert took to the video-sharing platform to share why men should always pick up the tab on a date.

In a viral clip, which has so far amassed upwards of 232,000 views, he explained that men should always put their credit card down in the first 'three to four months of dating.'

He captioned the video: 'Men should pay.'

Niko began by explaining that in 'modern day dating,' a lot of men think they should split the bill.

'No, you pay for the dates. You're paying, you are paying, and if you can't pay, then you shouldn't even be dating,' he said.

'You should be focusing on your job, on your purpose, and making money to the point where you can afford to take a woman out and show her a good time.'

He noted that if men asked women to split costs, they should walk away since those who refused to pay for dates had 'no concept of anything.'

The dating guru added: 'That just shows me you have no dating experience, you have no concept of what's masculine, what's feminine and you're just completely dropping the ball.'
