Biden gets a $1 billion 2024 boost from pressure groups including climate change activists and unions giving unprecedented cash support

A growing number of groups ranging from climate activists to labor unions have pledged an unprecedented amount of cash totaling $1 billion to help get Joe Biden reelected as he gears up for a likely rematch with former President Donald Trump come November.

The latest pledge came from the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Victory Fund, which announced on Tuesday it was spending $120 million in the 2024 cycle, the most the clean environment advocacy group has ever spent in an election cycle.

It comes as Biden has amassed a massive war chest as he recently received enough delegates to clinch the Democratic presidential nomination.

The president's campaign has $155 million cash on hand, the most of any Democratic candidate at this point in a cycle his campaign said. He received his strongest grassroots fundraising month to date in February when the campaign raised $53 million.

Biden's available cash is believed to have far surpassed former President Trump's campaign war chest as the ex-president also faces mounting legal costs.

Trump, who clinched enough delegates last week to be the GOP presidential nominee, only formed a joint fundraising account with the Republican National Committee recently. There was about $40 million cash available between the two of them at the end of January, according to election filings.

The unprecedented outside cash sum totaling $1 billion being spent in support of Biden was reported by the New York Times on Tuesday.

'Our investment must be equal to the stakes, and the stakes have never been higher,' said Pete Maysmith, Senior Vice President of Campaigns for LCV on LCV's spending. 'Trump and MAGA Republicans have been clear that if they are in control, they will stop at nothing to dismantle climate progress and our democratic institutions in favor of fulfilling Big Oil’s agenda.'

Maysmith praised Biden saying he has done 'more to fight the climate crisis than any other president' in history, a nod to the Inflation Reduction Act passed in 2022 by Democrats which included more than $360 billion for climate action.

Other groups that have been pledging massive sums of money to help get Biden reelected include labor unions, groups that focus on engaging specific voters and super PACs.

Last week, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) announced it plans to spend $200 million on engaging voters, its largest amount spent in an election ever.

'This election, workers are going to vote for candidates up and down the ballot who’ve got their back, said SEIU executive vice president Rocio Saenz. 'They are ready to support candidates like President Biden, who walked the picket line, took on big corporations, and invested in good, union jobs.'

A series of super PAC spending make up the largest spending in support of Biden.

American Bridge 21st Century, which back Democrats and progressives, announced it would throw down a whopping $200 million in the 2024 cycle including $140 million in paid spending in its effort to defeat Trump.

It will focus the paid media including on television, digital, streaming, radio and direct mail ads in the battleground states of Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania and possibly North Carolina.

Future Forward, which is the main super PAC supporting Biden, also already begun reserving some $250 million in advertising across battleground states, the largest single political ad buy by a super PAC ever.

Other groups have been looking at fueling their cash to help Biden in other ways.

Voto Latino, which is focused on the next generation of Latino voters and endorsed Biden, said it would be spending a record $44 million on the largest Latino-focused registration and turnout campaign ever.

MoveOn, a progressive public advocacy group, announced it would spend $32 million to help reelect Biden and other Democrats.

Earlier this month, Republican Voters Against Trump, through the Republican Accountability PAC, announced a $50 million general election campaign to target moderate Republicans and GOP-leaning voters in swing states to help turn them against Trump.

The coalition of groups spending to support Biden and against Trump does not include a series of other super PACs and groups that have focused on electing officials down ballot.
