Succession star Brian Cox is ditching his Mr Nasty reputation as he stars as Santa Claus in a new animated festive film, That Christmas.

The actor will voice Father Christmas alongside Jodie Whittaker, who will portray Mrs. Williams, and Bill Nighy, as Bill.

In the Richard Curtis film, which is his first ever animated project, the lives of residents from a charming seaside town are turned upside down one Christmas.

That Christmas follows a series of entwined tales about family and friends, love and loneliness, and Santa Claus making a big mistake, not to mention an enormous number of turkeys!

It will be produced by Locksmith Animation and is an adaptation of the beloved children's book series, The Empty Stocking, Snow Day and That Christmas.

The film will debut on Netflix later this year and also stars Fiona Shaw, Lolly Adefope, Alex Macqueen and Katherine Parkinson.

Richard said he is 'excited' for fans to see his imaginary world come to life when the film is released at the end of the year.

Executive Producer Richard said: 'This has been the most amazing adventure, my first animated film.

'It's been especially exciting to see the whole world I imagined come to life beyond my wildest dreams - and populated by a dream bunch of actors, their wonderful voices turned into such rich and funny characters.'

Director Simon Otto gushed that it is a 'dream come true' directing the festive movie.

He added: 'Becoming an animator had been on my Christmas wish list ever since I was a child and watching animated movies was one of the biggest Christmas traditions in my family.

'But never could I have imagined that one day I would get the chance to direct a Christmas film written by the one-and-only Richard Curtis and collaborate with some of the most iconic voice talents.

'Watching this cast bring life to these heart-warmingly funny tales and infuse them with the magic of animation is truly a dream come true. I hope That Christmas becomes a cherished tradition for audiences worldwide.'

It comes after Brian revealed the specific condition he'd need to return to his iconic Succession character Logan Roy for a spin-off film.

The actor was killed off in the fourth and final season which aired last year so anymore potential storylines would be a mystery.

But asked by Variety if it could be on the cards Brian said: 'We'll see. If it's good enough and [series creator] Jesse Armstrong wants to do it, I might do it.'

He added however that Jesse ended the show at the right time. He said: 'What I love about it and what I love about Jesse Armstrong is we don't go past our sell-by date.

'A lot of American shows do go past their sell-by dates. We've left people wanting. You always want to keep people wanting.'

The series has had an incredible year after winning six gongs at the 2024 Emmys including scooping the prestigious Best Drama prize for the third time in a row.

For their performances in the fourth and final season Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, and Matthew Macfadyen were also honoured.

It was unsurprising Succession was the main winner on the night, having entered the ceremony with 27 nominations - 14 of which in major categories - and a record-breaking three in the Outstanding Lead Actor category, for Kieran, Brian and Jeremy Strong.

Previously Brian has said playing ageing media mogul Logan Roy in the HBO drama series Succession has been the highlight of his 60-year career.

The part won him a Golden Globe award for best actor earlier this year and he was nominated for an Emmy award.
