A mom-to-be was left in tears after sharing her unusual baby name with a colleague - who told her it was a 'dumb name to give someone.'

The coworker in question took to Reddit's Am I The A**hole subreddit, to ask whether their honest reaction to the baby name was out of pocket or totally acceptable.

'So my coworker is pregnant with her first baby and she asked me yesterday about my thoughts on her baby name and things didn't go well,' the 23-year-old admitted.

'We work at a hotel that doesn't get much traffic so there's always a lot of downtime to sit and chat.

She added they were 'not friends,' but since they were both females around the same age, they chatted a lot when on the same shift, and were talking when she bought up the baby name topic.

'She asked me if I heard of the name Venus and I say yes and she says she's going to name her daughter that but add an A at the end so it's Venusa,' the woman said.

'She said that it's so exotic and unique sounding right?' she continued.

'I said no, it sounds like the already existing name "Vanessa."'

The mother-to-be was upset by this, and said her boyfriend and her parents liked the unusual moniker and they'd never heard it before.

But the Reddit poster disagreed, telling her it was a 'dumb' and confusing name.

'I said that it sounds like Vanessa and that it's kind of a dumb name to give someone since every time they say it aloud people will call them Vanessa, and it will always be misspelled,' she responded.

'She started to cry and said "Great people are already insulting my parenting choices" and that I'm being a b***h and left the shift early.

'Now our other coworkers have been messaging me saying I'm disgusting for making a pregnant woman cry.

'AITA? I was being honest since she asked me.'

Reddit users were divided on whether or not the woman did the right thing by telling her coworker her honest thoughts on the baby name, with many agreeing it wasn't a good name - but she could have told her in a gentler way.

'I did once know someone named Venus. THAT name isn't too bad. But Venusa--NOPE. What OP said about Vanessa is correct,' one person wrote.

'While I agree with the soft YTA (you're the a***hole), I really think people need to stop asking questions they don't want the answer to,' another chimed in.

'I'm with you [when you said it sounds like Vanessa], but then you said: "and its kind of a dumb name to give someone," and that's where you dipped your toe into YTA,' someone else pointed out.

Others joked it sounds 'like a disease.'

'I really need to get my Venusa checked out by a doctor,' one joked.

'Venusa nervosa. I hope it's not contagious,' a Reddit user wrote.
