Saudi Arabia has announced its latest wildly ambitious construction project: The world's longest sky pool built on the roof of a 250-room resort.

Treyam is being billed as an 'elevated haven' - a luxury complex, stretching over a desert lagoon, with a nearly half-kilometer-long swimming pool on its roof.

It is the latest vision unveiled by the kingdom as part of its plans to build a huge new futuristic city called NEOM. But it remains to be seen whether the project will ever come to be built.

The team behind NEOM said: 'Boasting an audacious design with minimal land intervention, Treyam offers guests an elevated haven in which to unwind, re-energize and enjoy majestic natural surroundings.

'Strategically located across the opening of one of the most beautiful, azure lagoons at the southern end of the Gulf of Aqaba, Treyam stands as a luxury gateway inviting guests to experiment with active lifestyles.'

It is said that guests will feel like they are floating with a 'breathtaking panoramic view of the lagoon'.

Designs show that the façade of the bridge will create a sunset-like illusion from a distance.

Its upper and lower floors offer panoramic views of the tidal lagoon below and vast skies above, merging into the landscape whilst maintaining the natural integrity of the shoreline.

NEOM says it is designed for adventure and endeavour.

The resort will offer a variety of activities such as sailing, diving and other water sports as well as land sports.

There will be a luxury spa and fine dining restaurants.

NEOM made the announcement about the latest plan yesterday.

MailOnline has contacted NEOM to find out what stage of planning the project is at or if construction has in fact already begun and also on the projected cost and expected completion date.

Treyam adds to a growing list of extremely optimistic projects all part of Saudi Arabia's new city NEOM.

NEOM was launched in 2017 by Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

It is located in a huge area of previously mainly empty land roughly the size of Belgium.

Situated on the northern coast of the Red Sea, the site has a slightly cooler climate than the surrounding area.

NEOM has attracted global attention since it began with its immensely ambitious plans - and in terms of ambition, one project takes the clear top spot.

The Line was announced in July 2022 and construction began shortly after.

It is a building straight out of a sci-fi film, a half-kilometer high, 200-metre wide, completely mirrored strip with a length close to the distance from London to Birmingham.

The idea to have an entire, virtually self sufficient society within the building was born out of the idea that if an urban area is in a straight narrow line, transportation will be more efficient.

The Line would have no roads or cars and would be serviced by ultra highspeed transportation systems.

Proposed buildings such as 170-metre long Line, where the size is large enough to create a self-sufficient environment, are known as arcologies.

If the Line is finished then it will be by far the largest building ever constructed on earth.

The Line, as the rest of NEOM, has been subject to a great deal of criticism.

Some have said it is Saudi Arabia attempting to take the world's attention away from their human rights violations.

Others say there is hypocrisy in the environmentally damaging construction processes creating allegedly environmentally friendly buildings.

NEOM is reported to have a completion date of 2050 - and if it is, it is thought by that point it will have come at a cost of $1 trillion (£783.5 billion).
