Librarians were shocked after a book on psychedelics was returned nearly 37 years late with a note saying 'sorry so late, it's been a stange long trip'.

Psychedelics by Bernard Aaronson and Humphry Osmond was due back to the Weld County Library in Greeley, Colorado on May 30, 1987.

But the book- which describes psychedelic experiences first hand - was only returned earlier this month - 13,437 days or 36 years, nine months, and 13 days late.

High Plains Library District posted on Facebook on March 18: 'Guns N' Roses was still a couple months away from releasing Appetite for Destruction on the day this book was due!

'Lionel Messi was born like two months after this was due!

'But, hey, we get it. Sometimes you get busy. For almost 37 years. It happens.

'Now...far be it from us to suggest that a book on psychedelics may, may, have affected someone's perception of time.

'But according to a note left in the book- 'It's been a long, strange trip'- it'd seem the person returning it is aware of the humor here.'

Kaylee Miller, a library materials supervisor with High Plains Library District in Weld County spotted Psychedelics at a book drop at the Riverside Library and Cultural Center in Evans.

She immediately suspected that the book was overdue as it was stamped as belonging to Weld County Library - indicating it was taken out before the library distrcit was formed in 2008.

Ms Miller said the district used to charge 10 cents a day for overdue books and therefore Psychedelics would have raked up a $1,300 fine by now.

The overdue copy will not be returning to the library's shelves and instead will be put in an archive.

Psychedelics was published in 1970 and includes discussions of scientific theories and the sociology of drugs.

The library staff joked on Facebook that if anyone could beat the current record then they are offering a 'total amnesty for the safe return of your items'.

They added: 'Although I'm not encouraging you to check something out TODAY and return late enough to bear the record, which would be...January 1st, 2061.

'We'll be closed New Year's Day. Probably. Maybe. By 2061, who knows?'
