Wisconsin Republican Rep. Mike Gallagher is set to leave the House next month, slimming down the GOP majority to just one vote.
The China Select Committee chairman already announced he was retiring at the end of his congressional term earlier this year after blowback for his vote against impeaching Homeland Security Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas.
'After conversations with my family, I have made the decision to resign,' Gallagher said in a statement. 'Effective April 19.'
Gallagher, 39, has been in Congress since 2017. He shares two young daughters with his wife.
The policy-focused pragmatic conservative joins a slew of high-level retirements among the House Republican ranks, after a congressional term marred by chaos.
Just after Gallagher's announcement, Rep. Kay Granger, R-Texas, chair of the powerful Appropriations Committee, announced she would be stepping down as chairwoman. She already announced she won't be running for reelection next term.
Friday was Colorado Rep. Ken Buck's last day after an early resignation, making him the fifth Republican this year to flee early or be expelled in the case of Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y.
On Friday Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., launched another movement to oust the speaker, filing a motion to vacate against Mike Johnson.

It's unclear whether she'll force a vote on it on the House floor, but Gallagher's departure puts Johnson's speakership in danger.
If there is a vote on a motion to vacate and all Democrats vote for ousting the speaker as they did last time, only one Republican would have to join them for it to pass.
But some Democrats have signaled they may not vote for the motion, especially if Speaker Mike Johnson puts Ukraine aid on the House floor. Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., told reporters Friday he would not vote to take the gavel from Johnson.
Gallagher's announcement comes just after a legacy-defining moment: the House passed a bipartisan bill he authored that would force TikTok parent company ByteDance to divest or else ban the Chinese video-sharing app.
Gallagher told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel last month he would continue to work on national security issues after Congress, with a mission to 'prevent World War III.'
'I’ve dedicated myself to restoring conventional deterrence in order to prevent a war with China, and so whatever I do next will be an extension of that mission.'
