Does RFK Jr. hurt Biden or Trump? As the candidate unveils his 2024 running mate Joe and the Donald face the most vital question

As Robert F. Kennedy Jr. prepares to unveil his running mate on Tuesday there's still a big question regarding which candidate he hurts more: Democratic President Joe Biden or Republican former President Donald Trump

Some recent national polls show him seemingly having a drag on Biden.

The Harvard-Harris survey that was released Sunday shows Trump with a two point lead over Biden when it's a two-person race. That lead expands to four points - 43 percent to 39 percent - when Kennedy is factored in.

But Ipsos polling from earlier this month shows Kennedy peeling voters away from Trump and Biden about evenly, and longterm, the independent could aid the current president's reelection bid.

'He helps Biden more than Trump,' Ipsos President Cliff Young told DailyMail.com. 'What we're actually seeing is that disaffected suburban moderate Republican that really didn't like Dobbs, probably doesn't like Donald Trump's record with women, that doesn't know where to go,' Young said of the typical Kennedy supporter.

Dobbs was the landmark Supreme Court case that overturned Roe v. Wade, which gave women a Constitutional right to an abortion with limits.

'He represents the disaffected vote. I think it's less about him. And more about the moment. Basically there are two candidates from the primary parties that are not so interesting to people,' Young also said.

Kennedy's voters skew female and Young said 'there's probably overlap there,' with Republicans who supported Trump's rival, former Amb. Nikki Haley, in the GOP primary.

Haley dropped out earlier on March 6 after losing to Trump in every state except one on Super Tuesday.

The March Ipsos survey, which was conducted from March 7-13 marking the beginning of the general election, shows Trump receiving 32 percent of the vote nationwide, Biden with 31 percent and Kennedy receiving 16 percent.

Young said at the beginning of Kennedy's candidacy his base was a 'little bit more like on the fringes.'

'But really what we're seeing now - the fact that he's getting like 16, 15, 17 - somewhere around there - percent of the vote when we ask the question, he really represents a broader critique on choices today,' Young said.

The independent candidate's base also represents Americans casting protest votes. When Kennedy supporters had to choose between Trump and Biden more than 70 percent said they were doing so to cast a vote against the other major party candidate

Kennedy voters tend to be more in line with Democrats on issues like climate change and abortion, though tilt Republican on the issue of immigration. Across the board Kennedy voters, Democrats and Republicans care immensely about the economy

When Kennedy supporters were forced to select either Trump or Biden, a much bigger percentage than average said they were casting a vote in opposition of one of the a major party candidates.

Seventy-three percent of Kennedy supporters who said they'd back Biden said they were doing so to vote against Trump, while 71 percent said their reluctant vote for Trump was really a vote against Biden.

Among all Americans, 57 percent said they would vote Biden because they didn't like Trump and 47 percent said they would vote Trump because they didn't like Biden

'What we're saying is that the anti-vote among RFK voters is even stronger against Trump and the same thing for Biden,' Young explained. 'What they're doing is they're rejecting both candidates.'

Kennedy voters tend to skew closer to Democrats on issues like whether the government should help fight climate change and protect abortion rights, though are more GOP-leaning on immigration.

When asked if immigration made life harder for native-born Americans, 66 percent of Kennedy supporters agreed.

That compares to 81 percent of Republicans who thought so and just 41 percent of Democrats.

While Biden and Trump improve upon their numbers when the pool is narrowed down to registered, likely voters, Kennedy actually loses support, suggesting that his supporters aren't always fully involved in the political process

Young also cautioned that RFK Jr.'s support may diminish as November's general election approaches.

Traditionally Americans embrace 'strategic voting' - meaning that they'll hold their nose and vote for the major party candidate they find to be less objectional than actually selecting a third-party hopeful.

'I do think we're overstated here a bit. In terms of what would actually happen, I think these numbers will be lower,' Young said.

Ipsos polling also showed that Kennedy's support decreased from 16 percent to 12 percent when the sample was registered, likely voters.

Young also said that historically a vice presidential pick doesn't move the needle.

'People don't change their calculus, it's typically the top of the ticket,' Young said.
