A woman was surprised with a heartwarming marriage proposal just moments after she rang the bell to mark the end of her cancer treatment.

On March 20, Angelica May, 27, from Wilmington, North Carolina, not only beat breast cancer - but she also got engaged to her high school sweetheart, Imeek Watkins.

After a 'long' battle with the disease, Angelica commemorated the completion of her chemotherapy by ringing the bell surrounded by her friends and family members, doctors, and nursing staff at Novant Health Zimmer Cancer Institute last week.

But she was given another reason to celebrate when her boyfriend of over 10 years dropped down to one knee and asked her to marry him in the middle of the festivities.

He explained that he had a video message from his young niece, who couldn't be there because her parents had just had another baby.

'Congratulations auntie Angelica,' the little girl said. 'Imeek would like to know, would you marry him?'

Suddenly, the crowd erupted in excitement as both Imeek and Angelica began to break down in tears.

A choked up Imeek told her before getting down on one knee, 'I'm so proud of you. We've been together for 10 years, it's been a rough and rocky 10 years but you've had my back and I've had yours.

'Everything I've gone through, you've always had my back. Everything I've been through, you've always been there for me.

'Seeing you go through this, it just shows me how strong you are. To be this young and going through something like this... It's just amazing how you pushed through it. I love you and I want to know, will you marry me?'

Angelica nodded yes through her tears, and he put the ring onto her finger before they hugged and kissed.

She then excitedly showed off the rock to her surrounding friend and family members, who all clapped.

While chatting with Good Morning America about the proposal, Imeek explained, 'I knew all our family will be there, close friends and her family, so I just felt like that would be a perfect time to do it.'

Angelica admitted that she didn't see it coming at all, and was completely surprised by the sweet moment.

'I was very surprised. I didn't expect him to do it on the day that I rang the bell. I was expecting him to propose later this year. He definitely caught me off guard,' she dished.

The pair started dating in high school and were together for 10 years before he popped the question.

Following her diagnosis with stage 2 triple negative breast cancer last year, Angelica was forced to quit her job.

But she told GMA that Imeek put his professional football career on hold so he could work two jobs and support his now-bride-to-be.

'He [put his] dreams on hold for me to help me get through this. So, I really am thankful for him,' she gushed. 'He's been by my side ever since we found out the news.'

Angelica, who still needs to get surgery and immunotherapy, said she's 'taking it day by day' but is excited to start 'wedding planning.'

She also hopes that sharing her journey can inspire others who may be battling the disease.

'I want people to know that there's always a light at the end of the tunnel. We may not see it during the time or think it's gonna happen, but there's always a light at the end of the tunnel,' she said.

'Keep fighting. Never give up. Always have hope, and always have courage.'
