The View fans are speculating that Joy Behar accidentally let slip that Whoopi Goldberg has been cast in the next Star Trek movie after a rather awkward moment on Thursday's show.

Joy's apparent faux pas occurred during an interview with Hollywood actress Zoe Saldana, 45, who was questioned by host Alyssa Farah Griffin, 34, about rumors regarding the upcoming film - and whether or not she will be involved.

'Maybe, maybe,' she replied as she looked over at a grinning Whoopi.

Zoe added 'just a little,' to which Whoopi, 68, repeated: 'Just a little.'

Joy, 81, quickly turned to Whoopi and warned: 'Don't tip your hand yet.'

Appearing somewhat confused, the Oscar winner asked: 'Say what now?'

Joy responded: 'Don't tip your hand yet, don't tell them you got the job yet... Did you get the job?'

Whoopi was left open-mouthed as Zoe asked: 'For Star Trek? Oh my God!'

The bewildered Sister Act star yelled: 'What is happening right now? I have no other work, I'm trying to get home to Sardinia.'

'Do you have it, or don't you?' cohost Sara Haines quizzed, to which Whoopi fired back: 'I don't know!'

Keen to get a concrete answer, Alyssa, 34, added: 'Zoe, is there anything you're able to share about it?'

'No, I just found out simultaneously with you guys that they hired a new writer and they're working on a fourth script,' Zoe replied.

'I would love to go back. It was a wonderful experience getting to incarnate these characters as part of such a legendary show that marked people's lives and continues to do that. I love to be in space guys! I love Earth, but I love to be in space!'

DailyMail.com has contacted representatives for Whoopi and Paramount, the studio behind Star Trek.

Unsurprisingly the awkward moment didn't go unnoticed by viewers, with one posting on X: 'So Joy jumped the gun? Whoopi wasn't ready to make that announcement about Star Trek. Lol.'

'Had to rewind that Star Trek bit make sure I didn't miss the clues #TheView,' another admitted.

A third person said: 'Zoë Saldaña talks about the potential Star Trek 4 on #TheView ! Did Joy slip that Whoopi is returning to Star Trek again?'

And a fourth viewer joked: 'Whoopi is going to slap Joy during the commercial break lol.'

Mother-of-one Whoopi starred as Guinann in 28 episodes of the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation between 1988 and 1993, alongside the likes of Sir Patrick Stewart, Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn, and Jonathan Frakes.

Zoe played the role of Nyota Uhura in the 2013 film Star Trek Into Darkness, and 2016's Star Trek Beyond.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that a much talked about fourth film could still shoot as Steve Yockey has reportedly signed on as the new screenwriter.

The follow-up to Star Trek Beyond has been plagued by a number of setbacks in recent years, including director Matt Shakman's departure in August 2022.

The filmmaker signed on to direct Fantastic Four for Marvel, leading Paramount to remove the film from its release calendar the following month.
