A seven-year-old boy has been praised online after he found a 14.5-carat sapphire worth up to $10,000 just 200m away from his home.

Riley Betteridge discovered the precious stone in the middle of Queensland's gemfields in Rubyvale near Rockhampton on Monday.

Riley, still in his school uniform, is seen running excitedly over to his dad Matt to show him the rare stone in a now-viral TikTok video.

'That looks really good mate,' he tells Riley after inspecting it with a headlamp.

'That is your best stone yet by far.'

Matt and Amber Betteridge run their family business Betteridge Sapphires from the heart of the state's mining region in Central Queensland.

They revealed Riley has been hunting for sapphires since he was just three-years-old when he spotted a stone from up on his dad's shoulders.

'He's got an eye for it,' Mr Betteridge told Yahoo News

'That's about 300 metres, maybe 200 metres from home.'

Mrs Petterson, who grinds and polishes the stones, said Riley's sapphire appears to have no internal fractures and could fetch up to $10,000.

'The finished colour will make the difference,' she said, explaining that brighter colours tend to sell for more than darker hues.

The family has decided to leave the fate of the stone in Riley's hands.

Footage of his incredible find has received almost 2million views on TikTok with many viewers leaving messages of congratulations for the seven-year-old.

'Surely that's earned him a day off school,' one person joked.

'I'm amazed that he knew exactly what he was looking for! We've all probably picked something like this up, think it was a stone and thrown it away!' another said.

It comes just weeks after Mrs Betteridge found a $2,000 sapphire buried deep in the soil while she was carrying her baby daughter

The eagle-eyed mum was seen in a TikTok video carrying her nine-month-old baby daughter Elise while she searched for the precious stones.

With the use of her fingers and a small rock she found nearby, she began to dig the mineral out of the ground and uncovered a 54-carat parti sapphire (a parti sapphire displays two or more distinct colours).

She told Daily Mail Australia she was shocked to find the stone.

'What we thought was going to be a small, not-really-worth-anything gem turned out to be this sapphire with a beautiful piece of crystal in it,' she said.

'It's [got] an absolutely stunning parti colour'.

Mr Betteridge collects the sapphires in their underground mine using just a pick and a shovel. He found an 834-carat sapphire worth an estimated $12,500 in the dirt two years ago while he was on an evening walk.

Australia is one of the few places in the world where parti sapphires are found after the gemstones were first discovered by gold miners in the 1850s.
