Top staffers for Democrat John Fetterman are leaving his office for more progressive jobs as the Pennsylvania senator moves more to the center on key issues.
The everyman Democrat, who loves Carhartt hoodies and dawning a disheveled goatee, has staunchly supported Israel's war on Hamas and denounced calls for a ceasefire.
He's also expressed support for increased U.S. border security, another position that puts him at odds with his party.
The freshman Democrat was elected after securing support from some of the most liberal members of Congress in 2022.
The towering 6 foot 8 inch senator, previously supported Democrat Socialist Bernie Sanders', I-Vt., in his 2016 presidential run and was endorsed by progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.
He used to call for health care reform and an increase in the minimum wage while on the campaign trail, but he's now distancing himself from the most liberal factions of his party.
And due to his shift to the center, three of his top communications staffers are fleeing his office for greener and more progressive pastures.
Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., staffer Joe Calvello (R), who has served on the Democrat's campaign and Senate staff, left the office earlier this month
The departure of his staff comes as Fetterman has doubled down on separating himself from the other progressive lawmakers on Capitol Hill
Joe Calvello, Fetterman's long-time communications director who helped him navigate a tumultuous Senate race working on the campaign, left to work with liberal Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson earlier this month.
'Mayor Johnson is a true progressive who is committed to fighting for the working people and families of the City of Chicago, and I am deeply honored to join his administration,' Calvello said in a statement earlier this month.
Nick Gavio, Fetterman's deputy communications director who started with his campaign, will leave the office at the end of the month to work for the Working Families Party, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
The Working Families Party boasts some of the most progressive lawmakers as members, including 'Squad' Reps. Ocasio-Cortez, Cori Bush, D-Mo., Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., and Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.
Both Calvello and Gavio are veterans of Sanders' 2020 presidential campaign.
Emma Mustion, who served in Fetterman's office as a press and digital aide, also left the office to work for Sen. Bob Casey's re-election bid.
The recent departures come as Fetterman has been outspoken about not wanting to be identified as a progressive.
'I'm not a progressive,' the Pennsylvanian told NBC News in December. 'I just think I'm a Democrat that is very committed to choice and other things. But with Israel, I'm going to be on the right side of that.
'And immigration is something near and dear to me, and I think we do have to effectively address it as well.'
The Democrat has been an ardent supporter of Israel and has broken with his party by saying Israel should not entertain a ceasefire with Hamas
'It's a reasonable conversation — until somebody can say there's an explanation on what we can do when 270,000 people are being encountered on the border, not including the ones, of course, that we don't know about.'
'To put that in reference, that is essentially the size of Pittsburgh, the second-largest city in Pennsylvania.'
