Bill Belichick is planning to write a book after missing out on a return to the NFL next season, according to reports.

Belichick, 71, failed to land one of the eight coaching vacancies that opened up at the end of the regular season after calling time on his iconic 24-year spell in charge of the New England Patriots.

Despite holding two interviews with the Falcons, the Patriots legend is understood to have rejected the offer he eventually received, before Atlanta turned to Raheem Morris.

According to The Athletic, Belichick is now considering filling his time by writing a book, albeit on a subject which remains unknown.

Following the success of Apple TV's recent docuseries on his Patriots team, which also earned criticism for its apparent negative portrayal of Belichick, a book detailing his own version of events would be of significant interest.

However, he could also choose to write about something a little broader, such as the art of leadership.

The publisher considered the frontrunner to produce it, Simon & Schuster’s Avid Reader Press, has previously sold books on the Patriots.

Belichick is one of the most successful coaches in NFL history after claiming a joint-record six Super Bowls during his storied spell in New England.

After not finding another coaching job, he is also hot property for television networks as they draw up their plans for the 2024 season.

Nevertheless, it is believed the veteran coach has told executives he has no interest in being part of a weekly pregame lineup.

A media combination of ESPN, Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions and NFL Films could work out, while Pat McAfee has also expressed interest in having Belichick on his daily talk show.

Belichick's legendary time with the Patriots has already been chronicled in a number of books, including Ian O’Connor’s New York Times best-seller 'Belichick' - although the coaching great himself did not contribute.
