Julia Stiles famously flashed a teacher as part of a savvy distraction technique to help free Heath Ledger from detention in cult classic 10 Things I Hate About You.

Now, Stiles' costar has lifted the lid on the memorable moment as he remembered the late Australian actor, who died in 2008, ahead of the 25th anniversary of the beloved teen romcom this weekend.

Davis Leisure, 73, played the unsuspecting Mr. Chapin alongside Ledger as bad boy Patrick Verona, who is tasked with trying to woo Stiles' character Kat Stratford.

Speaking to DailyMail.com, he revealed what really happened when a then 18-year-old Stiles flashed him on set.

'There was nothing to see,' Leisure confirmed. 'She was fully encased in a piece of wardrobe that no one saw in the film.

'She did not actually flash me. They would not do that to a minor on a set, that would be terrible!'

The Empty Nest star also revealed that he landed the role as he was willing to take an arrow to his behind.

The scene in question sees Kat's younger sister Bianca, played by Larisa Oleynik, accidentally fire an arrow into his backside during archery practice on the school field.

Leisure said the role was originally offered to television writer and producer Don Reo, but he turned it down, telling the director: 'I'm not gonna take an arrow in my ass!'

Leisure said: 'I was just sort of an afterthought because the director, Gil Junger, was a producer on many shows on television and also the one I was on, so I happened to be in Washington State when they were shooting and he said, "hey, you know we've got this part in a film."

Based on William Shakespeare's comedy The Taming of the Shrew, 10 Things I Hate About You features a handful of standout moments from Ledger's serenading Kat with a rendition of Frankie Valli's Can't Take My Eyes Off You, to Kat's drunken dance on a table to Notorious B.I.G's Hypnotize.

The cult classic, released on March 31, 1999, catapulted them both to fame, as well as Gabrielle Union, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and David Krumholtz.

Recalling his time on set, Leisure said: 'Julia, I didn't know who she was, but she was very lovely and a very good, talented young lady.

'Heath was a new kid, also. I mean, it was like their breakthrough film, and it was a lot of fun.'

Ledger died in 2008, aged 28, of an accidental drug overdose.

Reminiscing about the Australian star, Leisure said: 'It was sad because he was so young and also because he was so talented, he was so good at what he did.

'He evolved into such a terrific actor... at the peak of his career. I mean, here he is at the top, esteemed, and he had some issues, he had some demons that he couldn't overcome.'

Daryl Mitchell, who plays fellow teacher Mr. Morgan, echoed his sentiments, describing Ledger as a 'loveable and funny dude.'

'Let me say this about Heath Ledger,' Mitchell, 58, began. 'First of all, he had very great parents and Heath was a dude that definitely wasn't full of himself. His success came from his work, it wasn't accelerated because he was an internet sensation, he worked, he earned it, and he was not full of himself.'

Speaking about working with Ledger on set, he continued: 'All in all, the dude was a real good dude. He was so young and innocent and he was experiencing things in America and then I was telling him stuff that I do, growing up in my hood.... he was a loveable dude, but he was funny.'

Referring to his passing, Mitchell added: 'That's why I hurt so bad because you'll be sitting there and you're always left with that, "What if? What if I could have talked to him?" Because we touched base from time-to-time.

'That's the thing, he wasn't one of those dudes like, "project over, I don't need to see him no more", he reached out to me.'

Mitchell added that it was a pleasure working on the hit movie with a group of actors who were all up and coming in Hollywood.

'Like the whole cast, we were tight,' he said. 'That's another thing, I think the energy from how cool we were, we were tight, we would share experiences, and everybody was kind of getting their legs in the industry at the same time, so nobody had a big head.

'We were just having fun; we were just in Seattle having a good time... it was cool.'

Gil Junger's modernization of the Shakespeare classic marked Ledger's first American movie and took $60.4 million at the box office on its release.

His character Patrick is offered money by fellow student Joey Donner, played by Andrew Keegan, to date Kat.

Joey is desperate to date Kat's younger sister Bianca, but their father Walter (Larry Miller) forbids them from going out with boys until after they have graduated.

Frustrated by Bianca's insistence and Kat's rebelliousness, Walter ends up setting a new rule and tells Bianca she can date someone - but only when Kat does, knowing that Kat's antisocial attitude will greatly complicate things.

However, Kat ends up falling for Patrick while Bianca realizes that Joey is shallow and self-absorbed and warms to Gordon-Levitt's Cameron instead.
