Nine News crew watches on in horror as a hammer-wielding man allegedly attempts broad daylight car-jacking in Melbourne

The frightening moment a man armed with a hammer allegedly attempted to steal a Jeep in broad daylight was captured on camera.

A Nine News crew on Monday were on Victoria Street in Richmond, Melbourne, when a man allegedly started threatening two drivers in their late model Jeeps.

Footage showed the man swinging the hammer at the two drivers before getting inside one of the vehicles.

Shortly after however, he steps out of the Jeep unable to start it.

The man then appears to walk away casually before returning to smash the windows of one of the cars.

According to Nine News, passers-by who witnessed the incident described it as 'shocking' and 'frightening'. 

Victoria Police confirmed a man has been arrested in relation to the incident, but so far no charges have been laid.

A spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia that 'one male driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries.' 

Investigations are ongoing.
