After word spread of former NFL cornerback Vontae Davis passing away Monday at age 35, footage resurfaced of two of his former teammates, LeSean McCoy and Tre'Davious White, telling the story of how Davis retired at halftime of a game.
Davis played his final NFL season with the Buffalo Bills in 2018 and pulled himself from a Week 2 contest against the Los Angeles Chargers after the second quarter.
White recalls Davis first making the decision on the sideline and telling his teammates and coaches 'I'm done!' repeatedly.
When White questioned him, believing Davis meant this was his final season, or he was just joking around, Davis corrected him by saying this was his final game.
At halftime, teammates saw Davis taking off his wrist tape. He never played in the NFL again.
Vontae Davis was found dead in Florida on Monday. He was 35 and retired from the NFL in 2018
McCoy and White recall the time Davis retired from the NFL during halftime of a game
'I'm done Tre. This is a young man's game and I just don't have it no more,' White recalls Davis saying.
'Why the f*** would you go through OTAs (Organized team activities) and camp if you're going to do this s***?' Davis said laughing with McCoy.
McCoy joined the Bills in 2015, while White was Buffalo's first-round draft pick in 2017.
The 2018 season was the Bills most-recent losing season to date and was quarterback Josh Allen's rookie season.
McCoy has not played in the NFL since 2020, while White joined the Rams from the Bills this offseason.
Davis played for the Colts and Dolphins during his career as well.
