Internal turmoil in Congress as Republicans slam 'ultra conservatives' for FORCING their agenda to 'go left' and only get across finish line with Democrat help because they refuse to vote on priorities and are threatening to oust Speaker Mike Johnson

House Republicans are dealing with a persistent problem as their conference devolves into continued chaos: themselves.

Though the party has had majority control of the House since 2022, they have since then been plagued with infighting between centrists and MAGA loyalists.

These distinct factions within the conference have led to diverging views on critical policies like the burgeoning debt deficit, border security and foreign aid.

Most recently, firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., filed a motion to remove Republican Speaker Mike Jonson for forcing a vote on a $1.2 trillion government spending package. It is unclear if other Republicans would join her in ousting the speaker just months before the general election.

The GOP-on-GOP attacks are reminiscent of the build up that led to the removal of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted by eight Republicans who joined all Democrats to remove their leader just six months ago.

Now, some members are speaking out, ripping the 'ultra conservatives' for forcing situations that often benefit Democrats.

'Now they are threatening our speaker, again,' Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., told Fox Business Network's Maria Bartiromo on Monday.

'This whole episode of removing speakers and threatening speakers does nobody any good except the Democrat party.'

'We have some members that want to put the attention on themselves and not on the things we have to do as a conference,' Gimenez continued.

'What really bothers me, Maria, is that I have to vote on legislation which is more to the left that I really want to because of this fringe.'

'The ultra conservatives are actually forcing our agenda to go left because we can't get their votes.'

Notably, the House vote to pass the trillion dollar spending package in March garnered more votes from Democrats than Republicans as many conservatives railed against its price and lack of border security measures.

And as the House majority is shrinking to a razor-thin one vote margin, those hard-liners have more bargaining power than ever before.

But despite their recent increased influence in the House GOP, not much has changed in terms of policy objectives.

'We're exactly in the same place right now with Speaker Johnson, which I support, than we would've been with Kevin McCarthy,' Gimenez said.

'We need to come back together and get some sanity back in our conference.'

But sanity may be far off as the threat to tank the Republican leader remains.

If Greene goes forward with her bid to remove Johnson, he would almost surely need votes from Democrats to keep him in power, that is, if they are feeling friendly.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries did not extend that olive branch to McCarthy when he was facing pressure from conservative hard-liners, and because of it the California Republican was removed last October.

Now with a foreign aid bill being mulled by the lower chamber as the war in Ukraine has stalled, the House GOP has yet to reach a consensus on how to resolve the matter.

While rank-and-file Republicans are vying for a bill to help Ukraine, conservatives are warning Johnson that if he moves forward with it, they could make good on their threats to remove him.

'We've got to go back and get Republicans united to point out what our radical progressive Democrat colleagues are doing and present an actual competing vision,' Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, said recently.

'That does not start with, let me be very clear, putting a clean Ukraine bill down on the floor,' he continued.

House Speaker Mike Johnson must wrangle the support of both centrist and conservative Republicans to move anything in the lower chamber due to the historically small one vote margin

Greene has also warned Johnson against putting Ukraine aid up for a vote without securing the border first.

'If Speaker Johnson gives another $60 billion to the defense of Ukraine’s border after he FULLY FUNDED Biden’s deadly open border, the cruel joke would be on the American people,' Greene posted on X Monday.

'And it won’t be April Fools.'

House Freedom Caucus Chair Bob Good also sent a warning to Johnson when he answered 'no comment' to a CNN reporter asking him whether he would want to remove the speaker.

'I think that comment is a comment in itself,' he added.

Johnson, meanwhile, has said that he plans on brining foreign aid bills to the floor when Congress returns from recess next week.

'We’re putting that product together and we’ll be moving it right after the district work period,' he said Sunday.
