An American Idol contestant has been slammed over her 'disgusting' attitude after stopping her performance, demanding to sing acapella and calling out judge Luke Bryan.

Madai ChaKell, from Springfield, Massachusetts, caused quite the stir on Sunday's episode of the singing competition during Hollywood Night.

The 22-year-old brought the show to a halt as she attempted to perform Tattooed Heart by Ariana Grande for the judging panel - which also includes Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.

Tensions were already high after Luke had previously given Madai a 'no' during her initial audition - but things soon bubbled over.

Tensions were already high after Luke had previously given Madai a 'no' during her initial audition - but things soon bubbled over

Madai, who works as a content creator, was midway through a passionate rendition of the 2013 release before she abruptly stopped and spun round to glare at the pianist.

The singing hopeful said: 'Hold on, hey, can we start that over? I wasn't feeling that one. Sorry y'all.'

She restarted her performance but it was far from smooth.

Madai's voice appeared to crack before she suddenly flung out an arm and pointed toward the musician providing the accompanying track without turning to meet his gaze.

She firmly stated: 'Okay, we're going to do this acapella because that's not flowing the way we practiced.'

The performer appeared to redeem herself after going solo and was met with tepid applause from the judging panel before they shared their feedback.

Luke branded her voice as being 'shaky in spots' and bluntly asked: 'Is your voice okay?'

Madai admitted that it was 'not to where I would like it' but appeared to change her attitude backstage.

The singer then shared her annoyance about Luke's comment, adding: 'Then they tried to also play the card, "Is your voice okay?" What do you think?

'I was shaky and all [gargling noises] because look what y'all just did. Is your voice okay, Luke? I haven't heard you sing. Obviously I can sing.'

Following the incident, viewers flooded to X, formerly Twitter, to share their thoughts on the Madai.

One wrote: 'Damn, her attitude is disgusting.'

Another added: 'We do NOT want Madai ChaKell as our American Idol!! Boot her off! She's an arrogant jack**s and doesn't deserve another shot!! She's rude, nasty and condescending! She did NOT deserve all those do-overs!'

And a third said: 'Love that American Idol gave a second opportunity for Madai ChaKell to show what an a**hole she is.'

Ultimately, Madai was sent home by the judges when cuts were made.
