A college community is reeling after a popular young senior was found dead on campus just hours after it was sent into lockdown by a bogus active shooter alert.

Politics student Christian Samay, 22, was pronounced dead on Saturday in his frat house at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania in what college authorities say was an unconnected incident.

It remains unclear how the young student died.

The leading liberal arts college held its spring break two weeks ago so the Lewisburg campus was swarming with students as news spread of Samay's death at 1.50pm.

'Our student body is really shaken from the last 24 hours,' wrote student Amaya Becker on Facebook.

'Nothing is currently set in stone, but the students are currently organizing to have their own vigil on the campus quad in remembrance.'

The young man from Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, had spent three summers working as an intern at investment banks, and was just weeks away from graduating when the tragedy occurred.

He was the serving Treasurer of the college's Phi Gamma Delta society and his body was discovered at the fraternity property by university staff.

'This is an unspeakable loss for the Bucknell community, and our hearts go out Christian's family and friends,' college president John C. Bravman told students and staff in a letter.

'I wish to note that his death was unrelated to last night's active shooter alert and campus lockdown, and that the circumstances are not suspicious.

'I call upon all Bucknellians to support each other In this difficult time, and to keep Christian's family in your prayers.'

Students scrambled for safety when an alert was issued at 6.37pm on Friday and the university posted an alert on its Facebook page.

'Bucknell Public Safety is responding to reports of an active shooter,' it wrote.

'Campus is on lockdown. All students, employees and visitors are instructed to shelter in place until further notice.'

It was more than 45 minutes before the alert was lifted and police confirmed there was no imminent danger or threat to the community.

'The call was determined to be a hoax coordinated out of Virginia, according to an investigation by state police,' said Mike Ferlazzo, Bucknell Media Relations Director.

The college in rural Pennsylvania hosts 3,700 undergraduates, ranked 81st among the nation's universities according to the latest Wall Street Journal, and boasts novelist Philip Roth among its alumni.

Members of Samay's Phi Gamma Delta fraternity had just hosted their annual Shea Invitational Bowling Tournament in memory of member Christopher Shea who was just 20 when he died suddenly at home in Glen Cove, New York, in April 2016.

Monday's classes were canceled following Samay's death, and counselors and campus chaplains were also made available to students.

Union County Coroner Dominick Adamo said an investigation into Samay's death is ongoing, and an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
