Woman who paid to upgrade to economy plus on a 10-hour flight slams airline for 'tiniest seat' she's ever had

A woman who purchased a premium seat on a flight has slammed the airline for the lack of leg room, adding that was the 'tiniest seat' she had ever been on.

Brooke Johnson, who is currently travelling around Peru, hit out at Avianca, a Colombian airline, for its lack of benefits.

On Avianca's website, it states that plus seats allow customers to 'enjoy more space, adjustable headrests and recline.'

But seasoned traveller Brooke claimed it was the tiniest seat she had encountered on a plane before.

She paid $1,200 [£955] to fly from JFK airport in New York City to Cusco in Peru, which takes around 10 hours.

She had to shell out an extra $200 (£159) as she had a skateboard and her bag was deemed to be 'too big'.

She told her followers on Instagram: 'I typically don't have a problem flying because I'm so small I can put up with a lot of things. Just sparked a lot of questions for me. Mainly how is this possible?'

'I feel like I'm in a kangaroo pouch. I've never been so close to someone in my life. This is the smallest airline I've ever been on.

'Y'all if we go down, I don't even have enough room to turtle. I will literally hit my head.'

Brooke spent almost four hours on the uncomfortable flight and was not even offered a free drink, despite tickets costing more than economy.

On top of that, she claimed that the tray table 'could not even go fully down' and said she was unable to recline her seat.

The travel influencer added that there was no WiFi in the Plus cabin and they had 'no movies' for passengers to watch.

Avianca's website says: 'When boarding, you may encounter planes that look different on the inside; this is not our final experience.

'Some already have seats: Premium, Plus, and Economy; this process will be completed by the second quarter of 2024. Please note that some of our planes only have Economy seats.'

However, Brooke is not the only one who has had issues with Avianca, as others commented that they had similar experiences.

One wrote: 'I had this experience on this airline last summer and can say that you're 100% not exaggerating.

'I had an anxiety attack cause it felt like the spaciousness of a coffin. Knees touching the seat ahead of me and I'm 5'6'. Seriously we all deserve better.'

Another penned: 'That's why it's a budget airline.'

A third commented: '[I'm] flying Bogota to London in 2 months at 6ft1 and 6ft7, no idea it was so bad, hope it's a slightly bigger plane.'

A TripAdvisor review that was published online last year also said: 'We paid extra for the Plus seats, not willing to spring for Premium ('first class') seats since this was only an 80 minute flight.

'What a waste of money. There was NO extra leg room and the seats were just as narrow as regular economy.

'Plus you were still seated 3 across on each side of the row -- no extra spacing. And there was NO drink service, etc except for a price.'

Avianca has been contacted for comment.
