Sydney Sweeney's new psychological thriller Immaculate has left viewers vomiting in terror with its incredibly twisted and gory footage - prompting some horror fanatics to dub it once of the 'greatest' movies they've ever seen.

The new religious-themed horror flick, which hit theaters last month, has caused quite the uproar on social media, as spectators rushed to X, formerly Twitter, to share their dismay over the gruesome film.

And some even claimed that the scenes were so grisly that they actually got sick to their stomachs while watching it.

'Literally just threw up in the cinema watching Immaculate... Never again am I watching that film,' one person wrote.

'During the final scene of Immaculate, I'm pretty sure a girl in the front few rows of my screening threw up,' shared another user.

One reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes wrote, 'A completely terrifying and original horror film with a jaw-dropping ending, led by a wild and electrifying performance from Sydney Sweeney.

'While it doesn't break too much new ground in the religious horror sub-genre, a powerhouse performance from Sydney Sweeney and an unforgettable climax make Immaculate well worth your time,' said another.

'The filmmaking is conspicuous and stale, and bogged down in tepid jumpscares that often feel hollow,' slammed a third.

A fourth review read, 'A screenplay that is so devoid of details and payoffs that it is impossible to genuinely provoke the conversations it may want to have, despite a pretty solid final scene.'

While discussing the film and the controversial scene with Variety afterwards, the Euphoria star said she was determined to 'push the boundaries' and that she didn't even rehearse it.

'I love finding places that I didn't know I could unlock – pushing the boundaries and the limits of what people expect to see from me,' explained the actress.

'I wish that I had a formulaic answer for how I did it. But whenever a director calls "action," it's just like a switch.

'And I allow all of Sydney's thoughts and feelings and emotions to disappear. And I am now whatever character I'm playing – I'm Cecilia at the moment.

'I don't like to rehearse; I don't plan what is going to happen. What you saw (in the film's final moments) was the first take.'

She added: 'I always want to do something new. I don't want to do the same thing over and over again.

'It's a lot of the draw, character discovery – I love Cecilia's journey, and I loved the emotional trauma that she goes through.

'And being in the horror genre is fun, because in that genre, there's no limitations or boundaries.

'I always find it so funny when people pick apart a horror film's rules, or its storytelling.

'I'm like, "It's a horror film. You're just having fun." It's not a movie for the Oscars; you know that going into it.

'We want to create something good, but it's fun having characters that can go to such extreme, absurd places, and people don't question it.'
