This is the heartstopping moment several diners cheated death after a Mercedes driver rammed his car into a restaurant in the heart of Delhi.

CCTV footage taken from inside Fateh Ki Kachori, a shop on Dehli's Rajpur Road, showed a white Mercedes Benz smashing into the packed restaurant.

At least five people were injured in the crash, and were taken to nearby Tirth Ram Hospital. The Times of India reported that some of them suffered severe fractures.

Diners were seen turning to face the speeding car moments before it crashed through the front of the shop.

Glass and food were flung across the establishment as the car knocked several people down.

The car can then be seen slowly reversing out of the restaurant, known for serving kachori, a deep fried snack popular in India.

As it makes its way out, a concerned diner can be seen urging the driver, who has since been identified as 36-year-old lawyer Parag Maini, to stop in case there were people trapped under the car.

After making sure that no one is underneath the car, the driver slowly pulls further out of the shop, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake.

Diners were seen hugging each other and making sure that everyone was safe. One man needed to be carried out by two others, after taking the brunt of the collision.

Delhi's deputy commissioner of police Manoj Meena told local media that cops found the Mercedes in damaged condition. It was also reported that Maini's wife was also in the car at the time of the crash.

He added that charges of negligent driving and negligently endangering human life were lodged against Maini, who reportedly lives in nearby Noida, and that his car was seized.

A preliminary investigation revealed that he was not under the influence of alcohol, though his blood sample was kept on file for 'analysis.'
