Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer slammed former President Donald Trump after he claimed he spoke with the family of Ruby Garcia, a 25-year-old Grand Rapids woman who was murdered. Her family said that never happened.
In an interview with CNN, the Michigan governor blasted the ex-president for using the grieving family to 'score political points' during his swing through the battleground state on Tuesday for an event focused on immigration and the border.
'He was capitalizing on a horrible tragedy that happened,' Whitmer said Tuesday night. 'There is a family that is grieving the loss of Ruby Garcia, and she was a real person, with a real story, and its a horrible story that happened.'
Garcia was a young woman shot and killed in Grand Rapids on March 22. Her body was dumped on the side of the road.
Brandon Ortiz-Vite, 25, is charged with her murder. Police said he and Garcia were dating.
Ortiz-Vite was in the country illegally according to immigration officials and had been deported in 2020 but at some point re-entered the country illegally.

25-year-old Ruby Garcia's body was found with gunshot wounds on the side of US-131 in Grand Rapids last month.
During his Grand Rapids visit, Trump mentioned Garcia's 'heinous killing' multiple times and slammed the Biden administration for her alleged killer being able to return to the U.S. after he was deported.
'Ruby Garcia was shot multiple times with an illegally obtained handgun. Her body was dumped on the side of a highway left to die,' Trump said.
'Now, Ruby's loved ones and community are left grieving for this incredible young woman, remembering what they called her. They said she had just this most contagious laughter and when she walked into a room she lit up that room,' he said.
'I heard that from so many people. I spoke to some of her family,' he added.
But Ruby Garcia's sister, Mavi Garcia, who has been serving as a spokesperson for the family, said the ex-president and his campaign did not contact her or anyone in her immediate family.

'He did not speak with any of us, so it was kind of shocking seeing that he had said that he had spoke with us, and misinforming people on live TV,' Mavi Garcia told Target 8 after the event.
DailyMail.com asked Trump's campaign to clarify who the ex-president spoke with from the family as he claimed.
Whitmer slammed the former president for coming to her state to 'perpetrate the continued storyline that he had done everything to keep us safe, which is baloney.'
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer slammed Trump on immigration after his swing through the battleground state on Tuesday and accused him to trying to 'score political points' off a grieving family
Whitmer said while Trump was president, he called her to ask that Michigan send the National Guard to help with surveillance at the southern border.
'We helped him out because he couldn't get it done,' Whitmer said. She went on to blast him for helping tank the recent bipartisan border deal in Congress.
'I cannot abide when someone comes in and just tries to score political points off of someone else's pain and perpetuates a problem instead of actually trying to solve it,' she said.
During his Grand Rapids 'Biden's Border Bloodbath' visit, Trump also took aim at Whitmer, hitting her sarcastically as a 'real beauty.'
He criticized her as a 'terrible governor' and claimed the streets of Michigan are 'bad.'
Whitmer's response: 'it's baloney, and everyone in Michigan knows that.'
