Boone Jenner, the captain of NHL team Columbus Blue Jackets, and his wife Maggie have announced their son was stillborn in a heartbreaking social media post.

The 30-year-old Jenner got married to Maggie last July after popping the question in 2022. The couple then announced in December that they were expecting a baby in May.

She had been pregnant for eight months before giving birth one month before her due date.

The statement read: 'We are at a loss for words. A pain like no other. Our son, Dawson Jenner was stillborn on March 31st, 2024.

'While this pain is like nothing we’ve experienced before, it’s also shown us the immense love we have to give.

'As heartbroken as we are, we are incredibly grateful to be his parents and look forward to holding him again one day in heaven.

'We are thankful and feel blessed for the outpouring of love and support from our family and friends.

'We appreciate everyone respecting our privacy as we navigate this extremely difficult time.'

Messages of support quickly flooded in for Boone and Maggie after their devastating news, with Jenner's fellow NHL players offering their condolences.

'I’m so sorry brother. Love you. Thinking of you and Maggie,' Maple Leafs center Max Domi wrote on Jenner’s post.

'Love you guys,' his Blue Jackets teammate Zach Werenski posted.

Jenner has played his whole NHL career with the Blue Jackets after being drafted in 2011 and became captain in 2021.

Columbus is last in the Metropolitan Division of the NHL and Jenner hasn't played for the team since late last March.

They have just seven games remaining of the regular season, which ends April 16.

WHAT IS A STILLBIRTH?

A stillbirth occurs when a baby is born dead after 24 weeks of pregnancy.

If a baby dies before 24 weeks of pregnancy, it is known as a pregnancy loss.

Not all stillbirths can be prevented, however, not smoking or drinking, as well as not sleeping on your back and attending all antenatal appointments can reduce the risk.

What are the signs?

Signs may include the baby not moving as much as normal.

Pregnant women should contact their doctor immediately if they notice a difference to their baby's movement.

What are the causes?

Stillbirths do not always have an obvious cause but may occur due to complications with the placenta or a birth defect.

They are also more likely to occur if women suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes or an infection that affects the baby, such as flu.

Stillbirths are more likely to occur if women are having twins or multiple pregnancies, are overweight, smoke, are over 35 or have a pre-existing condition, such as epilepsy.

What happens after a stillbirth?

If a baby has died, women may wait for their labour to start naturally or they may be induced if their health is at risk.

Bereavement support groups are available to parents who have suffered stillbirths.

Some find it helpful to name their baby or take pictures with them.
