Australians have been left shocked after finding out the correct way to pronounce Chupa Chups.

The beloved lolly pop is a Spanish invention and is actually pronounced 'Choopa Choops' or 'Chewpa Chewps' rather than the way Australians say it ('Chupper Chupps').

The brand name comes from the Spanish word 'chupar' pronounced 'choo-par' meaning 'suck'.

Aussies were reeling at the discovery with many refusing to change the way they refer to the iconic confectionery.

Another little-known detail about Chupa Chups that surprised fans was that the familiar logo was designed by famed surrealist painter Salvador Dali.

'This is an emergency, I just found out that in other countries including Spain where the brand is actually from, it's pronounced 'Choopa Choops',' TikTokker Money Mitch alerted followers in a video.

'Not 'Chupper Chups', 'Choopa Choops' and that's not going to work for me.'

Aussie viewers were outraged by the news with one saying: 'I could've gone the rest of my life not knowing that'.

'Yeah nah, I'm not doing that,' another replied.

'I beg your FINEST pardon?' a third asked.

'Why would you tell me this!! Nope. I am choosing to pretend I never saw this,' someone added.

Many agreed saying they 'refuse' to change the way they refer to the brand.

'This is as relevant as UNO telling us we can't stack Draw Fours,' one person pointed out.

'It's like when I found out we've been pronouncing Nutella wrong,' a second commented.

However, Chupa Chups Australia's official website gives Aussies a pass in the Frequently Asked Question section.

'It's pronounced 'Chuppa Chupps/Chupper Chupps' in Australia. But there are plenty of other pronunciations around the world,' it clarified.

The differing pronunciations have sparked debates online among fans for years with many pointing out the varied meanings behind the name.

'Today I learned Chupa Chups is pronounced 'Chewpa Chups/Choops' in the US and 'Chup-pa Chups' in AUS/UK,' one user said on Reddit.

'Chupa mean suck in the Phillipines by the way. Also, Chupa is a Brazilian Portuguese slang for 'Suck it',' another explained.

''Shoo-pah Shoops' in Portuguese,' a third wrote and someone added: 'My husband is French he says 'Shuppa shup''.

Another 'mind-blowing' fact about Chupa Chups is that the logo was designed by Spanish artist Salvador Dali.

The renowned painter sketched the logo on a spare scrap of newspaper in 1969 and the brand has used it ever since.

'This just makes them even cooler,' one sweet tooth said.

'This is quite possibly my new favourite fact,' another agreed.
