A group of bungling burglars were caught allegedly trying to rob a corner shop – but only after getting drunk and falling asleep inside.

The crooks tried to carry out the heist at a tobacconist's in the early hours of Wednesday in Bogotá, Colombia.

However, when the owner turned up for work in the morning, he found them dozing inside and called the authorities.

Firefighters and police officers descended on the store before arresting the suspects in an almost equally bizarre way, with dozens of police and firefighters involved.

Footage taken at the scene shows how the large group of police officers in a combination of high-vis and black uniforms flanked the entrance to the rusty red building to ensure there was no means of escape.

With the shutter over the main entrance opened by just a couple of feet, a team of firemen then stood to the side of the doorway and can be seen in footage spraying water from a high-pressure fire hose inside the shore to flush the crooks out.

As one of the would-be-robbers gets too close to the doorway for his own good, a group of police officers are seen moving in, reaching through and grabbing his leg.

The images then show the officers dragging the man out and down the road as he struggles against them, before they are able to cuff his hands behind his back.

He looks worse for wear as he picks himself up after a long struggle, and staggers around with a bemused grin on his face.

Meanwhile, the footage appears to show that another man still held up in the shop attempted to fend off the group of police officers by throwing objects from inside.

This prompted one of the officers to return fire, taking a run-up to hurl an object of his own through the opening in the shutter where the man's legs can be seen.

Another clip shows how the accomplice was led into the back of a police van.

As all the drama unfolded, other local residents were seen in the footage watching on, some attempting to get inside their own buildings to avoid the water.

Another man seems completely unfazed, looking at his phone while leaning up against the entrance to another building.

And Marc remarked: 'Only in Colombia.'
