Bianca...Marie...Goldie... No wonder they called him Randy Shandy before his sad death on a New York pavement. And who'd have guessed that big sister Camilla would end up as Queen?

They called him Randy Shandy and no wonder – the list of women he conquered was as long as it was starry.

The Queen's adored kid brother Mark Shand, who died ten years ago this month, was a handsome swashbuckling adventurer whose life was paved with broken hearts.

Occasionally labelled a 'travel writer and conservationist', that was the tip of the iceberg when describing Shand's action-packed and often hilarious life.

Camilla thought him 'indestructible', but at the age of 62 he tripped on a New York pavement and, sadly, his roistering days were over.

As the anniversary of his fatal accident comes around in a couple of weeks the Queen will recall Shandy's harum-scarum 'all too short' life and the fun times they had together when young.

She recalled 'my charismatic and sometimes infuriating brother', noting with irony the means of his passing - an 'unfamiliar' paving stone - 'who had survived tsunamis, shipwrecks, poisoned arrows and even the fearsome Komodo dragons.'

The square-jawed Shand's crusade in life was to save the elephant and this he did heroically, leaving behind an international charity, Elephant Family, of which both Camilla and King Charles are now joint presidents.

But in many corners of the globe he'll be remembered for one other thing – his reputation as a great lover.

Growing up in Sussex, the son of war hero Major Bruce Shand and his wife Rosalind, Mark was never cut out for a conventional career.

He was kicked out of his school, Milton Abbey, for smoking cannabis, and started his adult life as a lowly guard at an Australian opal mine.

Later he returned to London and set up a business selling Cartier jewellery with his best friend friend Harry Fane, son of the Earl of Westmorland.

Tall, rugged and muscular, by the age of 22 he'd honed his skills as a gifted lover and was set to take the world by storm.

His first big conquest was Princess Lee Radziwill, whose sister Jackie was the widow of President John F Kennedy. Lee was 20 years his senior.

The relationship blossomed at a 1971 house-party in Barbados, thrown by Mark's uncle Lord 'Mad Harry' Ashcombe, to which Lee, Jackie, and others were invited.

Also present was Jackie and JFK's daughter Caroline Kennedy, then just 13.

Included in the house-party was the as yet unmarried Camilla, along with her flatmate Virginia Carington, daughter of Conservative grandee Lord Carrington.

The Barbadian air clearly had special qualities for dissolving the generation gap – because by the end of the holiday, Mark and Princess Lee were a loving couple.

And so too were Virginia and Mad Harry, 22 years her senior.

Camilla was in a long-haul relationship with cavalryman Andrew Parker Bowles at the time and determined to get him up the aisle but that wasn't to happen for another 18 months and meanwhile she was footloose and fancy-free.

In the coming months she would meet Prince Charles for the first time at a polo match, and the fireworks would begin.

Meanwhile her kid brother Mark, four years her junior, was also making hay.

Later he would stay with Princess Lee at her home in the West Indies, where once again he encountered Caroline Kennedy, then at school. He recommended the president's daughter come to London to undertake a fine arts course at Sotheby's.

When Caroline finally arrived in Britain, Mark was by now enjoying a fling with a beautiful American model and actress called Barbara Trentham, who was later to marry John Cleese.

But 18-year old Caroline determinedly sought out Shand and soon they were in a passionate relationship which flourished despite her being involved in two bomb incidents - one outside her rented Mayfair apartment and another outside her stepfather Ari Onassis' house - which nearly had her flown home by her anxious mother.

Instead she stayed with Mark in cosy domesticity, embroidering him a pair of boudoir slippers.

There could have been wedding bells.

The relationship fell apart when Caroline returned to the States, but Mark's bed didn't remain empty for long.

Next up was Bianca Jagger, wife of the Rolling Stones front man from 1971 to 1978.

When that failed there was no shortage of replacements, one being model Marie Helvin.

Later Mark was said to be close to actress Goldie Hawn, with whom he spent time in India filming a documentary on – you've guessed it – elephants.

Those are the ones we know about. There were many more.

Mark famously never talked about his conquests, and in 1990 married former French actress Clio Goldsmith, cousin of Jemima Goldsmith.

They lived in Rome, and though the marriage didn't last they had a daughter, Ayesha Shand, who's close to her aunt Camilla and who attended last year's Coronation.

The legacy Mark left behind is a huge one – half a dozen books, a few awards, and many TV documentaries focusing on his passion for conservation together with an impressive charity supporting the world's endangered elephant population.

But it's as a lover that he will surely be most fondly remembered.
