Police were called to a fire at a downtown address on March 29 and found Lowe inside the apartment trying to take his own life, they said he had self-inflicted wounds and had started the fire himself.

Officers declared a barricade situation after he allegedly refused to cooperate with officers.

Enzo then bit Lowe and he allegedly stabbed him multiple times before officers were able to take him into custody.

Lowe was taken to hospital in a stable condition - he has been charged with arson, assault and attempt to kill a police animal among other charges.

According to St Louis County Police, Lowe is separately accused of murdering Freddie Tribbett, 46, and was on parole following a 30-year sentence for rape, robbery and burglary charges from the 1980s.

Sharing the video of the aftermath of the attack, the force said: 'K9 Enzo did what he was trained to do. Go to the threat and protect our officers. In the process, a violent suspect stabbed Enzo.

'Here's what you didn't see in the moments immediately after the attack on our K9. All parts of our incredible department including SWAT, K9, Patrol, Air Support, Dispatch, and so many others worked to close roads and quickly airlift Enzo to the emergency clinic.

'Enzo was saved by the collective actions of so many and thanks to the talented medical workers who stabilized and treated Enzo, he is alive and recovering today.'

The video starts inside a police car and shows an officer speeding through the streets while trying to keep Enzo calm.

He says: 'You did so good, buddy. You're a good boy.'

The car then pulls into a veterinary hospital and the officer prepares to carry him out.

The film shows the back of the cruiser soaked in blood and when the officer goes to pet Enzo his hand comes back smeared in red.

Other staff help carry the dog inside and the officer says: 'Let's go, hurry up, please, please, please, hurry up.'

After Enzo was stabilized the staff decided he needed to be transferred to a more specialist hospital.

But the hospital was 18 miles away and with rush hour traffic there was no way they would make it in time by car.

A group of staff carried Enzo in their arms and ran to a helicopter, loading him in to fly to the hospital.

Over the sounds of the chopper, the officer can be heard saying: 'We’ve got one of our dogs coming in with a stab wound, I think they’re going to bring him on the helicopter.'

Once at the hospital they loaded him onto a stretcher and carried him inside.

In an update, the force said Enzo was 'feeling good, happy to see his handler!'
