A 38-year-old woman has expressed her shock after a librarian at her local library took a jab at her outfit in the midst of story hour.
Hilary Filipowicz, 38, who lives in Cleveland, Ohio, is a stay-at-home-mom of two daughters aged three and one.
'So I just got dress coded at our local library at baby story time,' Hilary gasped at the top of her two-minute TikTok video about the awkward encounter.
She then showed off her outfit which consisted of high-waisted 'mom-jeans'-style pants from Topshop and a short grey cardigan that Hilary said was from the teenagers' section at Target.
Hilary Filipowicz, 38, of Cleveland, was chastised by a librarian after her sweater rode up over her midriff as she was carrying her one-year-old at her local library
'Probably not age appropriate but whatever,' Hilary conceded of the crop-top style sweater as she talked viewers through her outfit choice.
She added that the Topshop jeans were probably '1,000 years old.'
'And I thought, wearing a sweater is a step up from my usual sweatshirt, T-shirt, leggings, jeans situation,' said Hilary.
'So I was feeling good about myself. She ruined that,' Hilary continued of the interaction.
The mom-of-two then recalled she was 'chasing my kids around,' who were 'acting wild' during story time.
'I always get a little stressed out that there, they don't sit during story time,' Hilary admitted.
'So after story time, this librarian comes up to me and she goes, "Are you mom or babysitter?" And I thought, "Oh my gosh, she thinks I'm young."
'So I go, "Oh I'm mom, not the babysitter."'
Of the situation, the stay-at-home mom of two told People: 'Postpartum is a weird time. You never know what to wear, what fits… Getting dressed is a fraught situation'
Many of the one million viewers of Hilary's video took to the comments, vocally taking her side on the matter
Hilary continued: 'So she goes, "You should know better," in this judge-y, tsk tsk kind of tone.
'And so I immediately start apologizing for my girl's behavior, and I'm like, "I'm so sorry. It's really hard for them to sit still. We're working on it. That's kind of why we come here,"' she recalled of her initial impulse to apologize for her daughters being disruptive.
'And she goes, "No, your outfit,"' Hilary recalled in astonishment.
'I'm thinking, "Oh my gosh… Did did I not button my sweater up? What's happening?"'
Hilary then explained the woman motioned to her stomach, pointing out that, as she carried her one-year-old, her sweater had ridden up, exposing maybe an 'inch of skin.'
'Apparently that's inappropriate, to show and midriff while you're like edging into 40,' Hilary snarked.
'And news flash, I guess I disagree,' she concluded in the video.
Speaking to People, Hilary said: 'Postpartum is a weird time. You never know what to wear, what fits… My closet contains three different sizes of clothes. Getting dressed is a fraught situation.'
Still, as she added to the magazine, she bears no ill will toward the library.
'I am such a library lover and we go multiple times per week. My preschooler is obsessed with books and, as a mom, it's hard to find free activities.'
But the odd exchange hung with her nonetheless.
'It's strange to be chastised like I'm a teenager when I'm 38, especially considering I'm totally in my mom era. I would never do anything to make anyone uncomfy.
'My toddler is 30 pounds. I'm lugging her around and I'm not thinking about how my clothes are moving or what my body looks like in those moments.'
Thousands of the post's one million viewers took to the comments, with most agreeing that there was nothing wrong with Hilary's outfit.
'I've been a librarian for 13 years and this is WILD. Our unspoken rule is "come as you are!"' one wrote.
'Your outfit is adorable. I'm so over the mom shaming,' a second echoed.
'Librarian here! Women literally breastfeed at my storytimes… Wear whatever you're comfortable in - I'm just glad you showed up. P.S. I wear cropped shirts to work all the time lol.'
Yet another library worker chimed in: 'That is insane. As someone who works at a public library, this infuriates me. So uncalled for and absolutely unnecessary. Your outfit is super cute!!'
