Thanks for joining us!

A frankly brilliant start to the Champions League quarter-finals with caution thrown to the wind.

Man City will be the happier of the two sides having secured a draw at the Bernabeu.

Pep Guardiola will hope his side can exert more control next week, with Man City eyeing a repeat of last year’s clash with Real Madrid where a first leg draw was followed by a crushing win at home.

Real Madrid will not go away easily though, with the 14-time winners showing how their side has evolved from a year ago.

It promises to be another enthralling match in this growing rivalry between the two sides.

There is more Champions League action tomorrow at Atletico Madrid face Borussia Dortmund and PSG host Barcelona.

See you then!

Mail Sport's Ian Ladyman and Jack Gaughan react to a stunning first leg

Pep Guardiola has had his say and now here is the verdict from Mail Sport's Ian Ladyman and Jack Gaughan from the Bernabeu.

'A bloody great game of football' and a 'classic'.

Agreed.

Guardiola: 'We showed our incredible personality'

Man City manager Pep Guardiola speaking to TNT Sports:

We started well but it’s so difficult against Madrid because they defend really well and the pace they have up front is unbelievable, so you always concede transitions and it’s impossible to control it
In the second half we showed our incredible personality in the way we play. We were playing with a lot of composure, much better than in the first half and we scored two fantastic goals.
But in the end, after 76, 77 minutes in this stadium, it’s an eternity. We knew it and we take a draw. Now we have to win a game to qualify for semi-finals.

Gvardiol: 'I am happy for my first goal for Man City'

Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol speaking to TNT Sports:

What a game. First time for me to play here at this stadium, amazing atmosphere and we take the result and look forward to the game at home.
We needed to be focused after [Real Madrid’s two goals] and try to come back in the game which we did. A good result in the end.
I am happy for my first goal for Man City. Especially against a great opponent. The first touch was not that good but in the end I thought well I'm just going to hit it and see what happens.

Foden named UEFA's Player of the Match

The UEFA verdict has come through with Phil Foden scooping their player of the match award.

'He was influential, hard-working and put in a stylish performance,' say UEFA.

Hard to argue with that assessment.

Man City have given their man of the match award to Jack Grealish.

A good night then for two England stars!

Foden applauds the travelling Man City fans

Good news for Man City is that Phil Foden is out on the pitch to applaud the travelling fans.

Foden looks to be limping slightly but he does not appear to be in serious discomfort having come off in the closing stages.

Man City cannot afford to lose Foden for any length to time.

His stunning goal tonight only underlined his importance with the Man City star rising to the big ocassion once again this season.

FULL TIME: Real Madrid 3-3 Man City

A brilliant first leg ends in draw after a match that swung one way then the other.

Phil Foden and Josko Gvardiol's stunning efforts appeared to have given Man City a first leg lead having trailed at half-time.

Fede Valverde ensured the tie is all square heading to Manchester with a superb volley.

The first leg did not disappoint!

Advantage Manchester City?

Great defending from John Stones.

The veteran Croatian has been a real impact for Real since coming on.

Foden forced off for Man City

This is a worry.

Phil Foden has pulled up and gone down. He took a whack from Camavinga as he strode forward.

Looks a painful one and the Man City star is receiving treatment.

Foden is going to be replaced by Julian Alvarez for the final five minutes. He limps off.

Vinicius Junior has come off with Joselu coming on the closing few minutes.

GOAL: Real Madrid 3-3 Man City (Valverde)

This is getting ridiculous! Going to struggle to pick out the best goal of this game!

Real Madrid looked to have lost their way, but out of nowhere they are level.

A cross finds Federico Valverde, who is racing into the box.

Valverde meets the ball flush on the volley and the Uruguyan picks out the far corner.

Another brilliant, brilliant goal.

Real Madrid have been rocked back by those two superb Man City goals.

20:33, 71'

GOAL: Real Madrid 2-3 Man City (Gvardiol)

Another stunner! From an unlikely source!

Just liek Real Madrid did in the first half, Man City strike twice in no time to turn the tie around.

Grealish cuts the ball back to Gvardiol, who takes a poor first touch but more than makes up for his with his second.

The defender smashes an effort from distance to pick out the far corner past the dive of Lunin.

Guardiola does his best David Pleat impression with a little jig in celebration.

Not sure he can believe the Croatian did that.

Man City now look to have the control they were missing in the first half.

GOAL: Real Madrid 2-2 Man City (Foden)

What a hit! Foden to the rescue!

An unstoppable effort from Man City's in-form star brings the defending champions level.

Bernardo Silva lays the ball off to Foden centrally and the England man does the rest.

One touch out of his feet, before bending a stunning effort into the top corner.

Unsaveable.

Real Madrid 2-1 Man City

Rodri is less than half an hour away from seeing his unbeaten run, which is now over a year, come to an end.

Real Madrid seem content to let Man City have possession and hit them on the break.

Ladyman: 'Rodri looks shot to pieces'

Ian Ladyman, Mail Sport Football Editor and host of the 'It's All Kicking Off' Podcast, at the Bernabeu:

Rodri looks shot to pieces. Like’s he’s run into some kind of physical and psychological wall. It’s very odd.

How big a moment could this be?

Vinicius Junior is found breaking into the Man City box by Rodrygo, but fails to find the target.

Against Man City missed chances like that could be costly.

Ian Ladyman, Mail Sport Football Editor and host of the 'It's All Kicking Off' Podcast, at the Bernabeu:

This Real Madrid crowd complain about everything, absolutely everything. And there are 80,000 of them.

It makes it so hard to referee but Frenchman François Letexie is having a good night so far.

Real Madrid 2-1 Man City

Fingers pointed at Grealish by some Real Madrid players after he wins a free kick. Definitely a foul.

Silva attempts a repeat from the first half, albeit a far more central free kick.

This one is straight into the Real Madrid wall.

20:11, 48'

Real Madrid 2-1 Man City

A first sighter for Man City in the second half.

Bernardo Silva picks out Grealish in space on the left flank.

Grealish attempts to replicate De Bruyne's opening goal against Crystal Palace at the weekend, trying to whip a right foot shot into the top corner.

His effort goes over the top. A positive start to the half for City.

20:07, 46'

SECOND HALF: Real Madrid 2-1 Man City

No changes for either side at the break.

Will be interesting to see what tweaks have been made.

20:05

Plenty for Pep to ponder

A difficult night so far for Man City.

What does Pep Guardiola have up his sleeve?

The cameras pick out Kevin De Bruyne making his way to the bench as the two teams emerge for the second half.

How well is he?

20:03

Haaland takes a blow from the referee!

Oops.

Erling Haaland has been kept at arm's length by Real Madrid in the first half.

The Man City star took a blow from the referee for his troubles at half-time.

At least Haaland stayed on his feet.

20:00

Real Madrid's equaliser credited as Dias own goal

Real Madrid's first goal has gone down as a Ruben Dias own goal.

Camavinga's wait for a Champions League goal goes on.

Sure Dias will be thrilled with that as well.

19:53, 45'

HALF-TIME: Real Madrid 2-1 Man City

What a brilliant half of football.

Real Madrid fans would have been fearing a repeat of last season's drubbing at the hands of Man City after falling behind two minutes in.

Two goals in three minutes, aided by two deflections, sees Real Madrid take a 2-1 lead into the break.

More of the same please in the second half!

19:50, 45'

Real Madrid 2-1 Man City

Into three mintues of added time at the end of a half that has flown by.

A spell of Man City possession fails to result in anything of note, as Real Madrid snuff out the attack.

19:49

Watch: Real Madrid's stunning turnaround

Real Madrid were stunned early on by Bernardo Silva, but it was some response from the 14-time winners.

Camavinga brought Real level with his deflected effort from distance.

Just minutes later Rodrygo put the hosts ahead.

Here is how they did it.

19:45, 41'

Real Madrid 2-1 Man City

Man City are having all sorts of problems down their right side.

Vinicius Junior races at the City backline but his right foot shot it straight down the throat of Ortega.

He will be disappointed with that effort.

Every Real Madrid attack down that side makes the absnence of Kyle Walker look increasingly important.

Real Madrid 2-1 Man City

One yellow card apiece now.

Manuel Akanji is the first Man City player to have his name taken following a foul on Vinicius Junior.

Took a lot longer than Tchouameni to get booked.

19:41, 37'

'Man City have no control of this game'

Ian Ladyman, Mail Sport Football Editor and host of the 'It's All Kicking Off' Podcast, at the Bernabeu:

This is not like a Champions League first leg tie. It’s like a next goal wins game of park football.

At the moment, Real Madrid look the more likely to score it. They have had six shots on target already. Two have gone in and the others have been good chances.

City have absolutely no control of this game. When do we ever say that about the treble winners?

19:38

Real Madrid 2-1 Man City

Jude Bellingham is in the wars.

A couple of minutes after taking a blow from England team-mate Phil Foden, he is down after a challenge by Ruben Dias.

Nothing wrong with Dias' challenge.

Bellingham is down as Real Madrid build another attack, but is soon back on his feet.

19:36

Real Madrid 2-1 Man City

Chances at both ends.

Grealish has an effort brilliantly blocked by Tchouameni at one end and Real Madrid break at speed.

Vinicius Jnr teases the Man City defence out on the left before teeing up Rodrygo.

He cuts across the ball and it whistles wide of the target.

Real Madrid look so vibrant coming forward.

19:34, 30'

Real Madrid 2-1 Man City

Rodrygo continues to pose a major threat out on the Real Madrid left.

The Brazilian goes in search of his second of the night cutting in and testing Ortega.

Safe hands from the Man City goalkeeper.

Ladyman: 'Real Madrid having far too much joy in City's half'

Ian Ladyman, Mail Sport Football Editor and host of the 'It's All Kicking Off' Podcast, at the Bernabeu:

Real Madrid – as we feared – are having far too much joy when they have the ball in the City half. They are finding pockets of space on which to work and that is leading to shots and half chances

For City, it’s about hanging in there at the moment as the next goal is obviously crucial in the context of the night and the tie.

Up front Erling Haaland is having one of those nights when he just isn’t in the game. Roy Keane – who recently likened his build-up play to that of a League Two player - will doubtless have a view…

Valverde tries his luck and forces a save from Ortega.

The hosts are shooting on sight and it has worked so far.

19:17, 14'

GOAL: Real Madrid 2-1 Man City (Rodrygo)

Astonishing.

The crazy start continues as Rodrygo puts Real Madrid ahead, with the aid of another deflection.

The Brazilian is sent racing through on the Man City goal but still has a lot of work to do.

Rodrygo is tracked by two Man City defenders and the onrushing Ortega. His low effort takes a slight nick and squirms into the bottom corner.

City are stunned.

GOAL: Real Madrid 1-1 Man City (Camavinga)

I did say this would not stay 1-0!

A huge slice of luck for Real Madrid as Camavinga brings the hosts level.

The Frenchman lines one up from distance and it takes a wicked deflection off Ruben Dias and flies past a helpless Ortega in the Man City goal!

Ladyman: 'City's goal born of some classic Jack Grealish football'

Ian Ladyman, Mail Sport Football Editor and host of the 'It's All Kicking Off' Podcast, at the Bernabeu:

That City goal was born of some classic Jack Grealish football.

The City forward got on the front foot and drove straight through the heart of the Real Madrid midfield, drawing a rather desperate foul from Aurelien Tchoumameni. From the resulting free kick, City scored...

Incredible start here. Home crowd already piling the pressure on the French referee but they’ve had no change out of him so far.

19:11, 7'

Real Madrid 0-1 Man City

The frantic start continues.

Haaland is denied with a shot from the angle by Lunin, but Man City keep coming.

Grealish has a shot blocked in the crowd and Real Madrid scramble the ball to safety.

I'll be amazed if this stays at 1-0.

19:10, 5'

Real Madrid 0-1 Man City

Real Madrid look for an instant response with Bellingham and Vinicius leading the charge forward.

The hosts want a free kick when Bellingham goes down under a challenge.

Vinicius blocks a clearance that goes behind for a goal kick.

GOAL: Real Madrid 0-1 Man City (Silva)

What a start for Man City!

The defending champions lead in Madrid two minutes. Bernardo Silva goes for goal direct from the free kick.

His low effort beats the wall and the dive of Lunin in the Real Madrid goal.

It is poor from Lunin, who should have done much better.

The Bernabeu is silenced as Silva races away in celebration.

This should be a cracker!

18:58

The teams are in the tunnel!

Real Madrid's fans are creating quite the atmosphere, with supporters all decked out in white.

The teams are now in the tunnel, which gives me the chance to remind you of the team news with kick-off just minutes away.

Real Madrid: Lunin, Carvajal, Rudiger, Tchouameni, Mendy, Kroos, Valverde, Camavinga, Bellingham, Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo.

Man City: Ortega, Akanji, Stones, Dias, Gvardiol, Rodri, Kovacic, Bernardo, Foden, Grealish, Haaland.

18:54

Guardiola confirms De Bruyne was forced out last minute

'Vomiting' was Pep Guardiola's response when asked by TNT Sports about Kevin De Bruyne's absence from the starting line-up.

Guardiola confirmed the Belgian had been due to start but was forced to pull out, with Kovacic coming into the team.

18:50

How did they both get here?

Sofascore have provided the numbers for Real Madrid and Man City in the Champions League this season.

Man City have been perfect in the competition so far with eight straight wins.

Pep Guardiola's side have also scored and created more expected goals than Real Madrid in the competition this season.

Real have been conceding less goals and big chances than the defending champions.

18:45

The two main concerns for Man City...

Ian Ladyman, Mail Sport Football Editor and host of the 'It's All Kicking Off' Podcast, at the Bernabeu:

Two main concerns for City as we approach kick off in Madrid.

The absence of Kevin de Bruyne – currently struggling with a sickness bug – and the way that Crystal Palace occasionally got through their midfield and on to their back four in the Premier League game at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

City won that game well by a 4-1 scoreline in the end but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Rodri and Mateo Kovacic will have to be resolute tonight.

18:43

Real Madrid's formidable quarter-final record

It will not surprise anyone to learn that Real Madrid's recent quarter-final record in the Champions League is extremely impressive.

Real have progressed from their last 11 quarter-finals in the competition.

However, Man City have lost only once in their last 12 games against Spanish opposition.

18:39

Welcome to the new Bernabeu!

The new roof is one of several new features at the Bernabeu following the stadium's £1.5 billion face lift.

The 83,186-capacity arena now boasts a retractable pitch, 360-degree video screen, skywalk and exclusive nightclub.

Following on from Ian Ladyman's suggestion about a pop concert, it is no surprise that Taylor Swift has two dates at the venue next month.

Wonder if Florentino Perez is kicking himself after seeing Fulham's recent plans for a rooftop swimming pool at Craven Cottage...

18:32

Ladyman: 'A draw here is a good result for City'

Ian Ladyman, Mail Sport Football Editor and host of the 'It's All Kicking Off' Podcast, at the Bernabeu:

So the roof is closed and I must say that it feels more fitting for a pop concert than a football match. Slightly odd decision by Real Madrid, in my opinion.

Spoke to someone at Man City about it this morning and they were pretty phlegmatic about it. In truth, it shouldn’t affect what happens on the field.

City are favourites to go through and that feels right. They will miss Kyle Walker as they seek to becalm Vinicius Jnr but I wouldn’t say there was any need to panic.

A draw here is a good result for City. I can't really see Real beating them at the Etihad.

Ancelotti - 'This is a competition that has given me a lot of happiness'

Carlo Ancelotti has been speaking to Spanish broadcaster Movistar ahead of his 200th match as a coach in the Champions League.

Presuambly with one eyebrow famously raised...

‘My 200 games are not the most important thing today, but they are a lot of games,' Ancelotti said.

‘200 games of nerves, of suffering.

‘This is a competition that has given me a lot of happiness throughout my career as a player and coach. It is still the most beautiful competition.’

Bernabeu roof closed as Real Madrid aim for hostile atmosphere

Real Madrid have succeeded in a request to UEFA to close the Bernabeu roof ahead of tonight's match.

The Spanish giants have aimed at making the atmosphere as hostile as possible, which they hope will be enhanced by the roof closure.

The retractable roof was installed during the extensive renovations of the stadium and was used for the last-16 home tie against RB Leipzig.

Will it make a difference?

Seems like a compliment to Man City to me.

De Bruyne named on the bench due to illness

An update from Mail Sport's Jack Gaughan in Madrid.

Will be interesting to see if De Bruyne features at all in that case.

Man City arrive at the Bernabeu...

What do we make of that team news then?

Really shows the luxury Pep Guardiola has that Kevin De Bruyne can be left on the bench for a Champions League quarter-final. A real testament to the form of Phil Foden.

Pep Guardiola spoke recently about the important role Jack Grealish could play in the run in. That faith is on show tonight.

MAN CITY TEAM NEWS: Foden starts ahead of De Bruyne as Ortega keeps his place in goal

Pep Guardiola's team news is always fascinating.

The Man City boss restores Phil Foden to the starting line-up as expected after resting him against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Foden comes in for Kevin de Bruyne, who drops to the bench despite scoring twice against the Eagles.

Stefan Ortega keeps his place in goal with Ederson remaining on the bench.

Gvardiol is fit to start having been a doubt.

Ancelotti reaches double century in the Champions League

Carlo Ancelotti will make Champions League history this evening as he becomes the first coach to take charge of 200 matches in the competition.

The 64-year-old last year overtook Sir Alex Ferguson to be the manager with the most overall matches.

Ancelotti has won 114 of his previous 199 fixtures in the Champions League, with the Italian having lifted the famous trophy four times as a coach.

Guardiola will be taking charge of his 170th match in the competition. His record stands at 109 wins, 34 draws and 26 defeats.

Visible security presence in Madrid after ISIS threat

The enhanced security operation has been visible in Madrid in the hours building up to kick-off for this Champions League quarter-final.

Spain's sports minister Pilar Alegría said more than 2,000 police and civil guard officers have been deployed following the threat.

Authorities in Spain have called for calm, stressing that threats are usually aimed at causing fear.

Security heightened after ISIS threat

Security has been heightened at all Champions League fixtures this week after an ISIS media outlet shared a post on social media with a threat towards all stadiums hosting quarter-final first legs.

Spanish and French ministers have revealed security will be stepped up with all games going ahead as planned.

Athletico Madrid and PSG will be hosting quarter-final matches tomorrow.

The Metropolitan Police have said they are ‘aware of the threat and that a 'robust policing plan' was in place for Arsenal's match with Bayern Munich this evening.

Are Real Madrid better or worse than the side demolished by Man City last season?

Real Madrid's team news gives me the perfect opportunity to point you in the direction of a piece by Mail Sport's Spanish football expert Pete Jenson.

He runs the rule over Real Madrid's team and whether the LaLiga leaders are in better or worse shape than the side thrashed by Man City last season.

Unsurprisingly Jude Bellingham's arrival has significantly boosted Real Madrid's midfield, but there are still areas of concern for Carlo Ancelotti.

REAL MADRID TEAM NEWS: Tchouameni partners Rudiger at centre back

Real Madrid have been fast out of the blocks in confirming their starting eleven.

Aurelien Tchouameni looks to be starting at centre back alongside Antonio Rudiger.

Lunin continues in goal with Thibaut Courtois still absent through injury.

Rodrygo, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr will form Real Madrid's attacking trio.

Real Madrid: Lunin; Carvajal, Tchouameni, Rudiger, Mendy; Camavinga, Valverde, Kroos; Rodrygo, Bellingham, Vinicius Jr.

Don't mention the Treble...

With Man City remaining in the race for the Premier League title and FA Cup glory, the prospect of a double Treble remains a possibility.

Pep Guardiola has been keen to play down talk of a repeat ahead of the latest installment of their Champions League rivalry with Real Madrid.

City got the better of the Spanish giants in 2020 and last season, but Real Madrid emerged as 6-5 winners on aggregate in 2022.

The Spanish giants remarkably scored twice after the 90 minutes to force extra time, before Rodrygo completed a dramatic comeback.

Mail Sport's Jack Gaughan takes a look at the tie ahead:

Real Madrid eye revenge against Man City

Mail Sport's chief football writer Oliver Holt wrote that Man City had been dethroning the aristocrats of European football one by one after dismantling Real Madrid in last season's semi-finals.

Real Madrid and Man City had played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, but the return fixture proved a different story.

Guardiola's side cruised to a 4-0 win over the 14-time winners to book their place in the final.

Will Man City be able to achieve a repeat this time around as they seek to establish themselves as the dominant force in Europe.
