An American woman has allegedly been killed by a conch shell during a brawl after her husband crashed their golf buggy into a bar in Belize.

Jennifer Lynn Griffith, 46, was in the passenger seat of the golf cart driven by her husband Maynor Rene Ancona, 41, when it crashed into the El Norte Bar in the city of San Pedro on Saturday night, Channel 5 Belize reports.

This allegedly led to a fight between the couple and bar employees, which escalated when one person 'threw a conch shell at Griffith, hitting her head.'

She was taken to hospital, but refused to get examined by the doctors and discharged herself. When her head started to hurt again the next day, she returned to hospital, where she died.

It is not known whether she died from injuries sustained in the reported golf buggy crash or the conch shell allegedly hitting her. A postmortem examination has been ordered.

In a press conference on Monday, local police commissioner Chester Williams said: 'It is my understanding that prior to the brawl, the lady was on a golf cart along with her husband, and it collided into a building with the golf cart during which she may have also hit her head. She had a concussion.'

He added that during the altercation that followed, she was 'stoned with a conch shell, which also caused her head injuries', after which police took her to hospital where she refused medical treatment.

'At this time, we are not able to say what the cause of death is. If she died as a result of the conch shell or as a result of the accident,' he said.

Commissioner Williams also said that he was not sure whether the person who had thrown the conch shell was a bar employee, only saying that they were one of those involved in the brawl.

He added that prior to her death Griffith had indicated that she did not want to press charges against the others involved in the brawl.

But Mr Williams said they will be charged 'at the very least for disorderly behaviour.'
