LA Times is slammed for confusing Trump with OJ Simpson in reporting of his death

The Los Angeles Times made a noticeable blunder its OJ Simpson obituary, which ran Thursday following the announcement of the former NFL player's death from cancer at the age of 76.

In the version that originally went up on the Times' site, the first sentence in the penultimate paragraph of the lengthy obit read:

'Long before the city woke up on a fall morning in 2017, Trump walked out of Lovelock Correction Center outside Reno, a free man for the first time in nine years.'

The error - where former president Donald Trump's name was used instead of Simpson - was quickly amended, but not before internet sleuths were able to screenshot and share.

A post on X from Politico Playbook deputy editor Zack Stanton, which has been viewed some 300,000 times, highlighted the error.

It was an unfortunate mistake for the left-leaning outlet whose editorial has not-so-subtly implied it would like to see Trump do some time behind bars.

The editorial board functions separately from the news reporters and obituary writers, but the paper is one of many in the mainstream media that has covered the former president with a degree of scrutiny and disdain that makes readers wonder about bias.

Trump has had little connection to Simpson in the 30 years since the gruesome murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.

Simpson was, in fact, a guest at Trump's second wedding - to Marla Maples - in 1993, just months before the double homicide that would change Simpson's life.

Several years ago, Simpson was asked by TMZ about Trump's forthcoming State of the Union address. He told the outlet that he 'stays out of politics,' and didn't 'know the president.'

But before walking away from the cameras, Simpson dolled out some free advice to then-President Trump, who was then facing his first impeachment trial.

He warned Trump to stay away from people 'like that Roger Stone,' the president's longest-serving political adviser who was arrested in 2019 and charged with seven counts pertaining to obstruction of justice.

The FBI conducted a dramatic raid of Stone's residence early in the morning, which many felt was too harsh a treatment of the elderly adviser.

Stone criticized the federal law enforcement officers for what he said was an overreach executed with more force than those involved in the capture of Mexican drug kingpin 'El Chapo,' and al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden - the latter of whom was killed onsite and had his body dumped into the ocean by Navy SEALs.

Simpson took a slightly different view: 'Let me say this. You know, I got raided by the FBI in Miami.

'Thirty-something FBI agents, five o'clock in the morning, and I had more than dogs. I had kids there.

'The FBI can be wrong, but to try and compare it to "El Chapo" and bin Laden? Hey man, bin Laden was carried out in a bag, not walked out in handcuffs. So many up, stop crying,' he said.

Murder victim Ronald Goldman's father said Simpson's death only serves as a reminder of the agony his family have suffered over the years.

'The only thing that I have to say today is that this is a further reminder of the loss of my son Ron,' Fred Goldman told DailyMail.com.

'It is a further reminder of my son's murder and a reminder about the many years we have missed Ron.'
