A 40-year-old man who was known to have mental problems and an obsession with knives is responsible for the shopping centre stabbing that killed six people.
Queensland man Joel Cauchi was shot dead by a lone policewoman mid Saturday afternoon after he stabbed six people to death and injured several more, including a nine-month-old baby, at Westfield Bondi Junction.
Cauchi was named by police during a press conference on Sunday morning with many disturbing details about his life quickly emerging.
He was known for having a strange obsession with knives with his parents at one stage taking his blades from him.
On Saturday, he used a 30cm-long knife to kill five women, including the mother of the injured baby, and a security guard.
Ashlee Good, 38, Dawn Singleton, 25, Jade Young, 47, and Faraz Tahir, 30, have since been identified.

In a disturbing Facebook post (pictured), Cauchi asked to meet with 'people who shoot guns'
Cauchi was an avid social media user and was part of several online communities.
In one frightening incident, he asked a group called 'Outdoor Adventures – Hikes, Water Sports, Snow Boarding, Camping and Etc' about a meeting with people 'who shoot guns'.
'Hi I am looking for groups of people who shoot guns, including handguns, to meet up with, chat with and get to know,' he wrote on December 6, 2020.
'Please send me a DM if you can help me out! I live in Brisbane by the way.'
Three years ago, Cauchi slammed a Queensland knife business for dulling his blades.
'Dealing with this business has been a nightmare for me. I put in two knives (one of which is pretty expensive) to be sharpened and he blunted them both,' he wrote.
'I made sure that I clearly, repeatedly and correctly gave all instructions when I put them in and he blunted them, then was very unhelpful afterwards, either being unable or unwilling to fix the job, leaving me with two blunt knives that are basically useless now.'
It's understood Cauchi was diagnosed with schizophrenia as a teenager and was unmedicated at the time of the horror attack.
He had moved to NSW one month ago and his social media indicates he previously lived in Toowoomba with his parents, Brisbane and Surfers Paradise in Queensland.
Six people - five women and one man - were stabbed to death at Bondi Junction Westfield shortly before 4pm on Saturday
Just one week before the Westfield stabbing, Cauchi posted about wanting to meet other surfers in Sydney's eastern suburbs.
'Hi, I am surfing Bondi this afternoon if anyone wants to meet there for a surf,' he wrote.
Cauchi was also part of several photography groups across Queensland and NSW and frequently asked for 'dark sky site' recommendations for astrophotography.
His Facebook profile shows he worked as an 'online English tutor' however, he has been found listed on at least two escort websites where he offered sexual services to men and women.
NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb on Sunday said Cauchi was known to police in Queensland and NSW for mental health reasons.
He did have a run-in with officers at The Rocks, on Sydney's harbour, last June during which he was stopped and searched before being let go.
'He's not known criminally, but he has come to the notice of law enforcement, in this state and Queensland for mental health related issues,' Commissioner Webb said.
Cauchi was involved with the Queensland Health system until 2012, after which his mental health care was looked after by his GPs.
'Queensland Health extends our sympathies to everyone involved in the tragic incident in NSW,' a spokesperson said.
'We will work with Queensland and NSW police on any information and assistance we can provide.
'The man had been treated by Queensland Health for mental health issues more than a decade ago but his care was transferred to a psychiatrist in the private sector in 2012.'
It's understood Cauchi's distraught family frantically contacted police after watching footage of the Westfield stabbing as they were worried he'd been involved.

Cauchi's social media shows he attended Harristown State High School and studied at the University of Southern Queensland.
He recently sought to learn German, Russian and Swedish in exchange for English lessons.
'Hi I am looking for a fluent Swedish speaker for a language exchange! I am a fluent English speaker and can teach that in exchange for being taught Swedish if you are interested,' he posted a Sydney language exchange group.
