The iconic '90s soap Melrose Place is set to make a comeback with a brand new series starring some of the stars from the original.

And while there's plenty of buzz around the reboot, some fans may have forgotten that the series was already revived once before.

In 2009, The CW network brought Melrose Place back exactly 10 years after the original series went off the air.

The CW had success reviving Beverly Hills 90210 in 2008, but the Melrose Place reboot didn't work out as well.

Despite starring many of the original characters, including queen bee Heather Locklear, The CW's Melrose Place bombed and was canceled after just one season.

The ill-fated season kicked off with a fresh batch of twenty-somethings living in the same West Hollywood apartment block as the original cast.

Despite being killed off at the end of season five, Laura Leighton's Sydney Andrews was brought back for the reboot, with her character now owning the Melrose Place apartment block.

The show eventually revealed that her death had been faked, but she was killed off for a second time in an ironic twist in the opening episode, which sparked a murder mystery that drove the season's various storylines.

After underwhelming ratings, producers brought back Locklear's Amanda Woodward in the 10th episode in a bid to attract the show's original viewers.

In the reboot, Amanda switched careers from advertising to publicity and served as the menacing boss of newbie Ella Simms, played by Katie Cassidy.

Ella, a ruthless young publicist, was created by the writers to be the second Amanda Woodward and a younger rival for Melrose's queen bee.

Amanda and Ella quickly became enemies in the series, trading witty jabs both at work and in the apartment block, which Amanda conveniently moved into while her Bel Air mansion was being renovated.

Other original characters to return included Josie Bissett's Jane Andrews and the villainous Dr. Michael Mancini, played by Thomas Calabro.

Jane ended up inheriting the Melrose Place apartments after sister Sydney's death and also ended up blackmailing Ella.

Unlike the original series, where Jane was portrayed as sweet but somewhat foolish, her character was revamped into a scheming villain for the reboot.

Daphne Zuniga's Jo Reynolds came back for two episodes, rounding out the returnees.

One of the biggest names to be part of the new cast was pop star Ashlee Simpson, who played Violet Foster, the secret daughter of Sydney.

Despite her star power going into the series, Ashlee's performance was savaged by critics and viewers, and she was quickly written out of the show before the first season had even wrapped.

'They hired [Ashlee] because they needed a good name to help create buzz,' a source told Us Weekly at the time.

'But she was embarrassingly bad. Producers cut her down as much as possible.'

Following her abrupt exit, Ashlee's big sister Jessica took to social media to blast the show's writers.

'CW, catching up on [Melrose Place]. Who writes this crap?' she tweeted.

'I have had bad scripts to work with, but this? Thank God my sister is amazing and got you some press… Ashlee was too good for that show and was the ONLY reason I watched.'

Another new character on the series was Lauren Yung, played by Australian actress Stephanie Chaves-Jacobsen.

The beauty played a med student of Dr. Mancini's who turned to prostitution to pay her way through medical school.

Following disappointing ratings, the Melrose Place reboot was officially canceled in May 2010.

Nearly 25 years after the original series finale, a Melrose Place sequel is now in development at CBS Studios.

Heather (Amanda Woodward), Daphne (Jo Reynolds) and Laura (Sydney Andrews) are all expected to return, via Deadline.

The new series will hail from Insatiable creator Lauren Gussis, and will be set several years after the original series, which ran seven seasons on Fox from 1992 to 1999.

This version will pick up with a number of the original Melrose Place residents reuniting, 'when one of their dearest friends dies suddenly.'

The news comes just days after several of the original Melrose Place stars signed on for a reunion at 90sCon in Daytona Beach, Florida.

After they all gather to honor their friend, 'the pressure cooker of a reunion soon uncovers old traumas, rekindles old romances, reignites old resentments, and reveals new secrets.'

The original characters will be thrown, 'into chaotic drama that’s reminiscent of the past, but with a much more modern perspective.'

It also seems that this series will essentially ignore the 2009 reboot/sequel that aired for just one season on The CW.

The original series was a spinoff of Aaron Spelling's Beverly Hills 90210, created by Darren Star, though it's unknown if Star will have any involvement in this series.

The cast also included Thomas Calabro, Josie Bissett, Doug Savant, Grant Show, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Rob Estes, Brooke Langton, Lisa Rinna, Kristin Davis and Alyssa Milano.

Both Leighton and Zuniga will also serve as executive producers alongside Gussis, Tiffany Grant and Jason Weinberg.

CBS Studios — which owns the entire Aaron Spelling library — will produce the series and is currently shopping it to networks and streamers.

If the project does move forward, more original cast members are expected to come aboard.

CBS Studios had also rebooted Melrose Place's flagship series Beverly Hills 90210 twice before.

The first came in 2008 with the reboot simply titled 90210 that ran for five seasons on The CW.

Fox then aired a season of a reality/scripted hybrid series dubbed BH90210 which brought the original cast back.
