We're all regularly reminded that we should be getting at least seven hours of sleep every night.

But whether it's laying awake with stress or being kept up by the children, in reality, many Britons get significantly less than this.

Now, experts have warned that your face could be paying the price.

Sleep tech firm Simba has used AI to reveal what can happen to your face if you don't get enough sleep.

From dark circles to extra wrinkles, the images may serve as a reminder of the importance of getting a decent kip.

To create the images, Simba first surveyed 2,000 Britons on their sleep patterns, as well as the aesthetic conditions of their face.

The results revealed that over half of Britons are getting less than the recommended seven hours a night, with over-55s suffering the most.

In terms of the impacts on the face, female respondents said they noticed light wrinkles, fine lines and sagging skin, as well as looking stressed and weary.

Male respondents, on the other hand, reported eye bags, dry skin, and looking weary when they didn't get enough sleep.

Age appears to play an important role in these effects.

While 12 per cent of all sleep-deprived participants reported dry skin, this leapt up to 20 per cent in 18-24 year olds.

What's more, almost a third of this age group experienced eye-bags after a bad night's sleep, compared to the 20 per cent average figure.

For older participants, it was dark circles that were found to be the main side effect of a sleep deprivation.

Based on these findings, the researchers used AI to imagine what men and women of different ages would look like with repeated unsatisfactory sleep.

'Not getting enough sleep, especially over a long stretch of time, can harm both your mind and body, and even affect your skin, whatever your age', said Lisa Artis, Deputy CEO of Simba's charity partner, The Sleep Charity.

'While genetics play a role in affecting our appearance as we get older, skimping regularly on sleep can make the situation even worse.'
