An influencer has said she has been left unable to walk after standing in a bucket of ice and salt for an online 'challenge' that turned her feet black and nearly required the amputation of her toes.

Reality TV star MC Thammy, real name is Thammy Caroline, suffered first and second degree burns after filming herself taking part in the ill-advised viral trend for her two million followers earlier this month with friends in Recife, Brazil.

'We spent 15 minutes with our feet on the ice with coarse salt,' she said, recounting the April 6 horror. 'When I took my foot out I never felt such pain in my life. Three of my toes had turned black when it came out of the ice bucket.'

Thammy was treated at a clinic where she says she was told she was at risk of thrombosis, and that she could have developed necrosis had she remained in the ice for another minute.

Unable to put any pressure on her feet, she says she now gets around the house by being dragged in a plastic garden chair by her mother, who pushes her from room to room.

'Wheelchairs are for the weak,' she said defiantly. 'We simply have just chairs.'

After being treated at a clinic, Thammy returned to the reality show but had to go to the hospital due to severe pain in her feet.

She said: 'My foot started to swell a lot. I left there and went to the hospital, at the hospital the doctor said that there was a risk of thrombosis and the other said that if I stayed another minute, my toes could have necrotised.'

Thammy added: 'I had first-degree burns on the outside and second-degree burns on the inside of both feet.'

And she has now told how her mother wheels her from her bedroom to her living room in a bar chair on wheels.

She also praised her mother for looking after her and taking care of her, saying: 'Do you understand how much I love you? I keep thinking about who I wanted to be when I grew up.

'And I think I wanted to be you. I don't know how you can be such a good person and I also don't understand why so many things happen with us. But, my God, I love you so much, my sister. You have no idea.'

MC Thammy, and her two male friends Teus Neiff and Artur Braz all suffered burns after attempting the challenge in Pernambuco, Brazil.

The trio had kept their feet immersed in a bucket of ice and coarse salt which resulted in their toes turning black as they were reduced to tears from the pain.

Why is the challenge so dangerous?

The mixture of salt, water, ice, and body heat creates a unique chemical reaction that drops the temperature of the ice down to -28C.

Holding something that cold directly against your skin will result in a full-thickness burn after only two to three minutes.

Frostbite takes time to develop as the blood slowly crystalises and causes damage - but the salt and ice challenge causes injuries much more quickly, damaging the skin and nerve endings in the process.

The endurance challenge for the reality show 'N1 Influencers' was hosted by the singer Anderson Neiff, known for promoting challenges for his followers, on April 6.

According to the singer, the entire challenge was conducted under the supervision of a firefighter.

During the challenge, the three influencers kept their feet in a bucket of ice with salt for 15 minutes as a witless test of physical and mental resistance.

However, the results were immediately alarming. Shortly after the end of the 'test', the competitors experienced acute and painful reactions resulting in significant burns.

As a result, they almost had to have their limbs amputated.

On social media, the influencers revealed their suffering through videos of them crying and showing their severe burns and blisters on their feet.

Artur Braz, another influencer who was on the online reality show, also suffered burns to his feet.

On his Instagram, he posted videos in the hospital and said that he had to be admitted, in addition to showing a series of blisters on his feet.

Anderson said in a statement made on Instagram: 'As soon as they removed their feet, they started screaming a lot, [saying] it was burning, they cried a lot.

'I was in shock, and the firefighter said 'no, it's okay, just put it in front of the fan here'.'

The two men were assisted and taken to private hospitals.

Thammy reportedly returned to the house where the challenge was being recorded but also needed to be taken to the hospital due to severe foot pain.

She said on Instagram: 'I asked the doctor, 'Is there a risk of losing my toe?' It felt like I was feeling it.

'Three of my toes turned black when I took them out of the bucket, and he said 'yes,' and told me I had a risk of thrombosis.'

Thammy, who dropped out of the reality show, and Teus, who continues in the competition, were reportedly discharged on Sunday and are receiving care at home.

Artur reportedly remains hospitalised at the Hospital Real Portugues, in downtown Recife.

His current health status so far remains unknown.
