Climb the money ladder! Four steps to guarantee yourself a $10,000 raise
  1. Arrange a meeting with your boss to six months before your next review to lay the ground work - don't immediately ask for more money
  2. Ask what it takes to be a 'top performer'
  3. Set clear and specific goals to achieve this - and note that you will want a 'compensation adjustment' for doing so
  4. Formalize the plan in an email - then six months later at your review, clearly demonstrate how you have met the goals set

At the beginning of the clip, he said: 'You could be making $10,000 more per year working the same job that you're working right now for the same amount of hours and it doesn't need to be that hard to do.

'You see most of us are terrified to negotiate because we think that the only way to ask for a raise is to just walk into our boss's office and put out our hand and beg for money. No, that's not how you do it.

'I'm going to let you in on a little secret, there's a game being played around you, and top performers know how this game is played.

'I'm going to show you how to win the game of getting a big raise with my exact playbook for what to say and what to do.'

He noted that his playbook involved four steps that would guarantee you get more money.

'Step one, lay the ground work. If you ask for a raise the right way, you're going to be way further ahead of 99 per cent of other people who try to negotiate their salary,' he explained.

'So, six months before your next review, set up a meeting with your boss to lay the groundwork.'

Then, the money pro said that you would begin by sending your boss an email and asked to set up the meeting while explaining that you want to be a 'top performer' and ask your boss what it would take to get there.

Ramit said that you should tell your boss that you would reach the specific goals they listed for the next six months and that after the months passed, you would want a 'compensation adjustment.'

He noted that this would set you up to earn $10,000 more, which if you invested it, could turn into $167,000 in a decade.

The money expert said that over the next six months, you should send your boss status updates every other week that show how you have been reaching the goals they set and every thing you have been doing.

He added: 'You get extra compensation for being a top performer, part of being a top performer is constantly keeping your boss updated.'

He explained that you should update them 'before they even ask.'

Ramit then said that you should go online to websites like Glassdoor and Payscale and do research about how much you should be making in your field.

He suggested you take notes about how much other people in your position were making them and bring them your boss.

During your review, you will present these notes as well as ones about how you have exceeded each of the goals set as if you are 'magically taking things out of a briefcase.'

He added: 'It's incredibly impactful simply to know that you did work outside of a meeting, so let me give you the four items that you should come prepared with.

'Number one, your current salary. Number two, competitive salaries from other companies, two more things to bring to the meeting are your list of accomplishments and other additional ways that you could add value above and beyond what you've already done.'

Rami said that at the end of the meeting, you would tell your boss how much more you should be getting paid based on your research and see his plan 'work like magic' when you get more cash flow.
