Children's gender clinic whistleblower tells Dr Phil patients were begging 'to have breasts put back on' and bosses told medics to 'keep silent' on de-transitioners

Bosses at one of America's most controversial gender clinics warned staff to stay quiet when distraught teenage girls returned begging to have their amputated breasts re-attached, its former case manager has claimed.

The Washington University Transgender Center in Missouri would prescribe irreversible gender changing drugs to children as young as 12 after seeing them just twice, according to the whistleblower who worked there for four years.

Jamie Reed, who is gay and married to a transgender person herself, told Dr Phil Primetime that classmates would arrive together demanding to transition as the fad swept through their schools.

'I saw a young person who was begging to have their breasts put back on after having surgery,' she told the program.

'We were encouraged not to make a big deal out of it and definitely not to tell other families. I couldn't continue to be silent on it.'

Reed worked at the clinic in St Louis Children's Hospital between 2018 and 2022 and helped force a change in Missouri law when she blew the whistle on its 'morally and medically appalling' programs last year.

'There were very few written protocols or guidelines,' she revealed today.

'One of the providers even said 'we were flying the plane as we built it.

'Doctors are acting like they're God when it comes to medically transitioning children.'

An internal investigation into the center in April last year found that 531 of the 1,165 children who sought help after 2018 received 'cross-sex hormones' and puberty blockers.

But Reed pointed out that hormone prescriptions can have irreversible and life-altering consequences, such as sterility.

'You're telling me that a 12- or 13-year-old, who can't decide which pajamas to wear, can come in and say, 'I've decided that I want to transition?' demanded Dr Phil.

'And with no more than two visits, not even a couple of hours, they say 'Okay, start taking this, start doing this,' which alters their biochemistry in a way that you can't come back from?'

'Correct,' Reed replied.

'The thing that kept happening is every time I would raise concerns and ask about the protocols and ask about the guidelines — this is just how the industry works, if a child says they're trans there's no questioning it. We just say, 'Yep, you're trans, what would you like?

'We started to see patients who were experiencing very significant medical harms being rushed to the emergency room with lacerations requiring stitches.

'We had patients contact us who were begging to have body parts put back on within months of having surgeries.'

She said that social media pressures have sparked an explosion in the number of children seeking treatment and that they are now overwhelmingly young women wishing to become men.

'They would come in, and they would almost have the exact same storyline, too, like they learned what to say from a video to explain, 'Oh, no, really, I've felt this way from early childhood', she said.

'But a lot of their parents couldn't remember anything like that.'

Reed's revelations caused a sensation when she went public with them in February last year after becoming horrified at the harm she was seeing.

She said that in 2019 she started noticing a growing number of patients deciding not to go through with transition, or deciding to return to the gender they had been previously.

She and her colleague started collating information about those patients with the assumption that the doctors would want to know about their change of heart.

'We thought the doctors would want to collect and understand this data in order to figure out what they had missed,' she explained.

'We were wrong. One doctor wondered aloud why he would spend time on someone who was no longer his patient.'

But she said she was hesitant to raise her concerns because anyone who did was deemed a 'transphobe'.

Reed claimed doctors would ask questions like 'do you want a dead daughter or an alive son?' to 'bully' children's parents into going ahead with gender transitions - under the pretense that not doing so would make them suicidal.

The whistleblower said working at the center, which medically transitioned 600 children within two years, was 'like I was in a cult, and I had to de-program my way out of it'.

In September last year the center said it would abide by legislation signed into law by Missouri's Republican Gov Mike Parson which prohibits doctors from performing gender transition surgeries or prescribing hormone therapy or other drugs for gender transition to children under 18 years old.

'This creates unsustainable liability for health-care professionals and makes it untenable for us to continue to provide comprehensive transgender care for minor patients without subjecting the university and our providers to an unacceptable level of liability,' it said in a statement.

The law went into effect on August 28, but exempted patients who had already begun transitioning.
