Aaron Boone was sensationally ejected just one batter into Yankees vs Oakland Athletics on Monday when umpire Hunter Wendelstedt mistakenly thought crowd abuse came from the New York manager.
In astonishing scenes at Yankee Stadium, Wendesltedt first clashed Boone over a strike call seconds before his mistake, and could be heard on television yelling: 'If you've got anything else to say, you are gone.'
Boone stood silently and gave the umpire a thumbs up to accept his warning but as Wendelstedt turned back away, he heard something from the fan, sat above the New York dugout, that he thought was Boone.
It was two strikes and out for the Yankees manager, as Wendelstedt called back: 'Aaron, you're gone.'
Boone, who does have a history of angry clashes with MLB umpires, was understandably stunned and pointed back into the stands at Yankee Stadium before racing over to Wendelstedt to make his case.
"I don't care who said it. You're gone!"

Television replays clearly showed Boone didn't say anything and the comment came from a fan sat directly above the Yankees dugout, wearing a blue sweater.
Boone screamed: 'I did not say a word, it was the crowd! Bulls***! I did not say anything, Hunter! I didn't say a f***ing word!'
As Boone continued to desperately plead his innocence, Wendelstedt said: 'I don't care who said it, you're gone.'
YES Network, the broadcaster of Monday afternoon's game, shared footage of Boone stood in silence for several seconds before Wendelstedt ejected him in error.
Speaking after the game which the Yankees lost 2-0, Boone said his ejection was 'embarrassing' and that he plans to reach out to MLB about it.
'I think everyone saw what happened,' Boone said. 'Just not ok, I don't understand it. I didn't have a huge issue, he explained his call in a fiery way back at me.
'Obviously, it was not right. I'm a bit more vocal and fiery than some. But I was standing down and I just heard "you're gone, Aaron" and I couldn't believe it.'
The fan in question then removed his blue sweater although it was more likely due to the sunshine rather than a bid to remain incognito.
Fans watching on were stunned by the incident with one writing on Twitter: 'A Yankee fan yelling at the umpire and ump mistaking it for Aaron Boone and tossing him is incredible.'
Another replied to the clip and joked: 'Me, sending my oldest son to his room when it was actually my youngest son who talked back to me.'
