A 23-year-old Manhattan woman was raped in her own apartment building by a predator attacked her on the stairs and told her: 'If you scream, I'll shoot you.'

The terrifying ordeal occurred on early Sunday morning when the suspect encountered the woman on the second floor of the building near Thompson Street and Prince Street in New York City.

Building surveillance cameras caught the creep leaving in a hoodie.

The video captures the man wearing a black hoodie with red lettering forming a heart shape, dark pants, and orange sneakers as he sneaked into the building around 4:10 am on Sunday.

He was already inside the building when he attacked, putting the victim in a chokehold then raping her.

As of Tuesday morning, the suspect remains at large. He was last seen heading southbound on Thompson Street.

On Monday, authorities released footage of the suspect and appealed to the public for assistance in identifying and locating him.

In the video, the suspect can be seen walking along the sidewalk and passing the building entrance initially.

He doubled back and grabbed the door as someone, possibly the victim, was walking inside the residential building.

NYPD initially said the suspect followed the woman into the apartment building, as captured on surveillance camera.

The 23-year-old was walking up the stairs when she encountered the attacker, who was walking down from the third floor, according to PIX11

He allegedly walked past her, approached her from behind, placed her in a chokehold and forced her into the second-floor hallway, police said.

Although the video does not depict him carrying or simulating a weapon, sources said he threatened the 23-year-old, stating, 'I have a gun.'

That's the moment he shoved the woman to the ground and sexually assaulted her.

He allegedly caused injuries to the victim's right knee, resulting in bleeding, as reported by the New York Post

The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, as local communities are startled by the horrifying incident.

'You just think that you're safe, and it's never going to be you. And then it is. So I mean, I'm glad. I know now I'm going to be even more aware than I already am. It's just terrifying,' Soho resident Alexa Everett told ABC7.

Those working in the bustling neighborhood of NYC were also shocked, including Crystal Xu.

She told the outlet, 'I feel like it's always just safe to be like, you know, hyper-aware of your surroundings just anywhere in New York, like no matter how, you know, busy or so if you think you are, you never know.'

The estimated monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the building where the alleged rape occurred is $3,800, according to Zillow.

Anyone with information in regard to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
