The designer behind Princess Diana's wedding dress has admitted he regrets not styling one particular royal.

Welsh fashion designer David Emanuel, 71, has dressed everyone from Catherine Zeta Jones to King Charles, but he really had his eyes on the late Queen Elizabeth, according to the Daily Star.

While the Bridgend native is very well-accomplished, he wishes he'd expanded his repertoire for designing for the late monarch, the longest reigning queen in history.

He told the Daily Star that he' been lucky enough to dress many of the world's most beauitful women, but he added: 'The only thing I regret is I never did anything for Her Majesty the Queen - I would have loved to have dressed her. At least something, but I missed that one.

'Cher would be good, Cher would be fabulous as she loves clothes and she loves to make an entrance, as does Lady Gaga'.

However, David, who catapulted to fame alongside his then-wife Elizabeth for creating the wedding dress that won over Britain, has managed to bag American superstar Madonna.

And it's not just British royalty the famed designer would like to design for as he's keen to design a wedding dress for the Hollywood elite - namely Meryl Streep.

While he expressed sorrow that the Iron Lady star had split from her husband of nearly 40 years back in 2017, this could give him the chance to wow the A list actress with his knack for couture, if she ever decided to tie the knot once again.

He described the her as a 'fabulous actress' but confessed he knows she's not too fussed about fashion - but sees this as a challenge worth pursuing.

What he finds striking about Meryl in particular is her versatility, as all of the star's works are very, very different to each other - and that extends to her styling.

And even David, the highly sought-after household name refuses to name his favourite client, out of politeness.

But he did say that when designing, every woman is different - and that means working with each client's strengths and weaknesses.

But it's as much Hollywood royalty as conventional royalty for David who hopes to maybe one day design a white gown for Meryl Streep, often hailed one of the best actresses of her generation

This comes a couple years after designer says that memories of the 'fun and joyous' Diana came 'flooding back to him' following the iconic gown going on display in 2021.

He described the late royal as a 'global icon of style, beauty and compassion', recalling how she transformed from a teenager into an 'extraordinary woman' in the time he worked with her.

Appearing on Lorraine from outside Kensington Palace, the London-based designer said that Diana and Charles' wedding day was a 'joyous occasion' during a time of 'social unrest' in 1981.

He later added: 'When I first met her she was a teenager and she turned into this extraordinary woman. She was a global icon of style, beauty and compassion and that’s how the public loved her. She was a philanthropist, she cared, and that’s why people adored her.'
