Officials of the Fairfield Police Department rescued the lives of nearly 50 dogs after a blaze filled a New Jersey pet hotel with deadly smoke.

Deputies responded to a 911 call about smoke rising from the Pio Costa Industrial Complex on April 20.

On arrival, they saw building #9, which housed the K9 Resorts Hotel, a full-time dog boarding facility, filled to the brim with smoke and nearby businesses on fire.

Bodycam footage shows the officers forcing their way into several locked doors of the building without any equipment to save the pets.

According to the police department, all of the 46 dogs were successfully evacuated and were moved to a separate facility at the time.

Fairfield Police Officer Stacy Chiarolanza told NBC, 'It was a little bit of everything. Carrying them, the smaller dogs, but we also found a bunch of leashes inside, and we were able to leash dogs to get them around to the back.

'There was a brief moment where one dog was missing and like a storybook finale, one of the cops walked out with the dog in his arms.

'It's a great feeling. We know this could’ve turned out worse. I had four of my officers go in without their breathing apparatuses, and risked their lives to save these dogs. They won't call themselves heroes, but we all know they’re heroes, absolutely.'

Graham Clarke, the man who made the 911 call to the police, said he and his wife had locked the doors of their workshop and were on their way home when they saw the fire.

He explained, 'We called 911, I looked to see if anyone was in obvious danger.

'As soon as we knew there were dogs in the building, we were like: "Well, people are going to be going in and bringing the dogs out, need someone outside to hold the dogs." So, me and my wife and some friends who were working late here, we were corralling the dogs.'

Officials later said that the heaviest fire damage was in the area of the MR Convenience and Smoke Shop.

Other nearby businesses, including the Eatery Care Kitchen, Bella Art Tattoo and the K9 Resorts Hotel experienced smoke damage.
