A world-renowned plastic surgeon has revealed the main cause of premature ageing - and five simple ways to look younger without committing to Botox or fillers.

Dr Daniel Barrett, from California, is a board-certified breast and body expert.

He recently shared that stress is a major concern when it comes to ageing because it impacts your gut, which is directly linked to skin health as well as metabolic, brain and immune health.

If you are stressed for weeks, months or even years at a time, your body, especially your skin, consistently misses out on essential nutrients and stunts the growth of new skin cells.

'Sleeping, exercise, sunscreen, not smoking and decreasing your sugar intake will slow down the signs of ageing,' Dr Barrett said in a video.

What can I do to be less stressed?

The best way to fix your complexion if you are stressed is to go directly to the source of the problem rather than attacking the symptoms with creams and lotions.

Skin experts recommend relieving stress with mindfulness and meditation and by eating a diet rich in antioxidants.

They also recommend getting enough good-quality sleep.

Drinking a lot of water and focusing on your gut health will also help clear up your complexion.

How can I fix stress-related skin problems?

The best way to fix stress-related skin conditions is to reduce the amount of stress in your life, experts say.

Meditation and mindfulness: Taking 10 minutes a day to practise deep breathing exercises can have a huge impact. In the same way, daily self-massage can also help to soothe the trillions of nerve receptors that lie just beneath the surface of our skin.

Eating antioxidants: A good rule of thumb to follow is: the more colourful the fruit and vegetables, the more antioxidants they have.

Drink plenty of water: This helps to keep the skin moist.

Focus on gut health: Herbs including chamomile, ginseng, ginkgo biloba, lavender, lemon balm, dandelion, rhodiola and the adaptogen ashwagandha can all help to relieve stress and support your body through stressful times.

Sleep well: It is important to sleep deeply for as long as possible because this gives the body time to regenerate.

What will slow down signs of ageing?

Dr Barrett discouraged smoking and eating a high-sugar diet if you want to slow down the process of ageing.

'Cut sugar out to protect your skin,' he said.

He also recommended everyone wear sunscreen every day - even in winter - and to get enough exercise in every week.

How will sleeping more help me look younger?

Getting enough sleep encourages muscle growth and repair, helps keep your brain alert, improves your blood sugar levels, and prolongs your lifespan.

It's recommended you get seven to nine hours of sleep every night and maintain a good circadian rhythm.

You should aim to go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day - even on weekends.

A reliable routine and time outdoors in daylight in the morning helps to regulate your body's internal clock.
